Harvard, for one, doesn't let you do that. You can't even get into most of their library buildings without an ID.

Mm... I'm not sure about that. Google Scholar is a good resource, that's true. But there are hundreds of papers I've looked for that are simply not accessible without proper access. That said, I don't support this site.

I'm no expert about this topic (effects of society on evolution), but it seems to me like after a certain age, there are diminishing returns from having grandparents. One critical point might be when you get a stable job. After that, the ro

I think the title is a pun. The cells, as cancer, are immortal. But they will also be immortal for much longer than a typical patient's cancer cells because her particular cells have been commandeered for research.

Unfortunately, evolutionary pressure can't act on a) mutations caused by (foreign) viruses or b) hereditary mutations only expressed late in life, after child-bearing years. Once we've had our children and raised them to be independent, evo

True, but most people freeze zero-passage cells in liquid nitrogen so that such mutations don't occur. I'm not sure at what stage her cells were originally frozen down, though, or if they're routinely passed at repositories like ATCC.

Henrietta’s immortal cells weren’t just important in aiding in finding cures for diseases and the like, they also ended up indirectly causing major reform in how scientists worked with cell cultures, in terms of making sure

Why are the only routers supported using 802.11G? I got one of the Buffalo 300N routers and was looking forward to trying this instead of DD-WRT.

When you use Ubuntu natively, it runs like a charm. Compositing makes for an even more beautiful OS than OS X (in some respects, though there is sometimes tearing), and the whole thing really jives quite nicely.

I meant the source-highlight dependency. Is that included with the binary?

Looks nice. One note: It says it requires MacPorts. You should probably say it requires the source-highlight package, regardless of how you get it. (I'm going to install via Homebrew, some might compile it manually.)

A lot of people use #each this way in Ruby, yes, but I don't think it's usually justified. #each is primarily designed to handle side effects. "Do stuff to item" is usually better accomplished with a chain of #map, #select, #inject, #grep,

Because you know, your "example" YAML parsing is useless in and of itself, it doesn't result in a working ruleset, you skipped the whole part where you feed that data to your code and setup the stuff that actually does work

I don't have any superfluous lines in my code. I wanted to load a config file into my runtime, and I did. Not superfluous at all. The (extraordinarily) superfluous code is the code used to set up the object config system where none is neede

What's the use case, though? If you want config file syntax, use a config file. If you want a program, use code. Building up an object system like this for simple configuration seems excessive to me. I would do something like this: c =

I don't get the appeal of coding like this. To me, a unary operator shouldn't mutate its receiver. (Edit: neither should a binary one.) Instead, the resulting value is meant to be assigned to a new value or otherwise manipulated. This is a

In this case, yes. But not for all types of startups. When I say I won't "put stock" in another bookmarking service for a while, I don't mean I won't use one. I mean I won't use one like I would if I thought it was a permanent, reliable fix

It varies. I'd be lying if I said mood wasn't involved. But I ask questions like: 1. How responsive are the startup founders when I e-mail them about problems? 2. How portable is the work I'm going to put into the site? Da

One reason I don't sign up with every new startup that comes along--even if they're innovative and helpful and better than the competition--is that I don't want to invest time in something that could fail. And every time I see a web service

Regardless of its legal status, this post is really tacky. It leaves me with a gross feeling, sort of like when the awkward kid in the conversation follows every joke someone makes with the same joke a minute later--when he finally gets it.

An e-book's container format is (essentially) orthogonal to whether or not it has DRM. Kindle uses a convoluted, badly designed container, where everyone else uses ePub, which is an open standard. Bottom line: There is not Kindle support be

So it's not clear to me: what is this app? Is it a text document? Did this group really go through development efforts to build an app as, basically, an ad? If so, I think people are misunderstanding the point of "there's an app for that".
