Privacy is important, but data control (in a restrictive sense) is not the same as data portability.

WDTVlive works fairly well for media-related stuff, not so much for other server functions.

Your word games aside, atheists do not believe anything. They only accept as true what they see or can be demonstrated.

If the wager deals with only the Christian god, it's arbitrarily limited and has little value.

1. I'm not sure why forcing yourself to believe in god (if that is even possible—I don't think it is) helps in times of tragedy. One, you know you're just telling yourself stuff to make yourself feel better. This, in itself, can't feel good

I haven't read every last comment yet, but this is the most civil discussion on religion I've ever seen online. Congrats, HN. I think you've passed the test for excellence.

"Not believing" is not the same as "believing against". The first involves no claim, positive or negative, about religion except in response to a question or prompt. The second is an active disbelief or truth claim. Most atheists do not go

It was ignored. The point is not who can see your data (privacy), the point is whether or not you can take your data and move it elsewhere (portability).

I think the author is missing a key point... these guys are letting you own your own data, whether you host it on your own server or on a wordpress.com-like shared host. Presumably since you control the database your info is in, you can eas

My guess is that people who are interested in Diaspora, at least at first, are current on their web browsers. I think there's a trend among web services (esp. Google) to prod even everyday people away from older browsers, especially IE6. Th

My point again is not that CO2 doesn't become cell mass. It is that in elementary/high school, kids are not taught that. Kids do learn the concept of photosynthesis. They just learn the energy side and not the big picture. So the author

Yes, very. I could tell you all about the glycosidic linkages. Some observations: Polysaccharides are not sugars. Mono- and di-saccharides made of carbohydrates are. Glucose has other uses than becoming cellulose or starch or glycogen. The

It's 7.2. Without context (and he gives none for the expression) everyone (including me as a scientist) must assume abstract numbers. What's more, we know he's not using measurements because there are no units...

I don't think his premise is true. He says we were all taught photosynthesis in elementary and high schools and now all we know is a phrase that has no meaning for us. In fact, no one teaches the whole story of anything in biology before co

As far as I know, most of the CO2 in plants goes to respiration for energy production. Not saying it doesn't go to mass, as well, but it's the energy side of things that people learn in elementary school. We're not stupid, and this man need

A fine list to be sure, but any attempt to set up a new canon is going to fail like all the other canons have. There is no one list we should read to be cultured.

That is certainly one problem Windows has. It's also not really orthogonal (I'm looking at you, registry) and doesn't strive for simplicity or elegance like Unix/Linux tend to do. (Why the user folder is so ambiguous and mysterious before W
