When this was written it was bang on. But Twitter is deliberately choosing to go down a different path. I can easily predict Twitter will find itself swimming in the wrong direction within a couple years because the need for an open messag

Software patents like this should never be granted. Any kind of gesture we naturally do in the real world quite obviously can be rendered in software. There's nothing "invented" here. Microsoft was similarly granted a patent for grasping

They made a fatal mistake in building a Rails app. That led them down the wrong path for an ecosystem that needs to be a decentralized protocol. See tent.io, they've got the right idea. Not sure if they'll be successful, but work in this

You'd have to be silly to not expect what Twitters next move will be.

This is very clearly the end of Twitter as a "platform". Now that Twitter is huge, they don't want or need developers or 3rd party clients. They want to centralize everything into a monetizable service. That would've been fine if that wa

The email "problem" is what Facebook fixed. Email is broken for a lot of reasons. Managing your contacts, finding lost contacts, finding the email of that person you met last night, party planning, birthday reminders, attachments, sharing

PDA's usually had a few extra buttons because navigation using a stylus was always a bits awkward. If you ever tried scolling a web page using a stylus and scrollbars in Windows Mobile you'd understand why every PDA had a D-pad and a separ

I expect the Internet and social media is going to continue to evolve and blow past what Facebook was able to accomplish faster than anyone thinks. I don't expect Facebook will last as the largest social network for much more than 5 years.

The US government should also be subsidizing solar energy. If it's not cost competitive against oil, they should subsidize it until it is. The estimates are that by 2020 solar will reach fossil fuel cost parity. So you're only talking 8-

The policy is intended to thwart China from undercutting prices and flooding the U.S. market with cheaper solar panels. I find this rather disturbing. If solar energy is ever going to replace fossil fuels the price of panels wil

I hope this crew is looking at WebRTC. The true killer app for a distributed social network is going to be a global decentalized video chat network. Imagine Google hangouts without Google. Even just to implement a voice-only chat without

Most of these seem like derivative of other successful startups, like most of YC companies. They all just seem "done" already, so what's the point? On another thread there was the release of a YC-based iPhone controller which was no bette

I actually thought a 2-year stay at a software job was a long time. In my experience, staying beyond that was pointless. After 2 years you've mostly learned everything you can learn from that position, and I've never received a raise more

I found the way Twitter works very similar to IRC. #hashtags, DM's and @references are all from IRC. Twitter made a system like this easier to use, and centralized it one big system rather than loosely connected chat networks. In a simila
