True, but I've taught non tech staff to use docker desktop to run qa and demo environment.

Isolation is another important reason people use docker. I don't want my developers to have to manage a complex dev stack and it's dependencies. I would argue that this is the primary use case for local docker dev these days.

I believe they would just need to virtualize what isn't already provided by xnu-darwin. This may already be the case, but the memory allocation for docker vm on mac really handicaps things.

Leading by example. You have a lot more patience than I do, unfortunately I think this person just wants to be mad.

I'm pretty excited about this and see if being the norm for most web dev in a few years.

Network volitilty and debugging were the reasons I moved back to a mostly local dev setup. I also run linux though so resources aren't much of an issue for me. I'm actively considering setting up remote environments for one of my

Honestly memory is the primary constraint for most of my mac devs running our docker envs.

I develop exclusively on Linux, but it would be nice if my teammates who don't didn't melt their laptops doing local dev on mac. If apple gave a shit about non apple developers they would provide the kernel hooks to help make it p

I only work when I'm paid to work, and debugging containers and digging through stack traces sounds like work to me. I totally get that some people like that kind of thing and have the time for it. I dont.

It's called abstraction, and it is what enables you to live in modern society without knowing the technical details of every facet of your life. Furthermore, not being able to hook into xnu to virtualize macos is a business decision, n

Can you share any details on M1 perf and resource consumption? Docker vm on mac is noticeably slower and consumes a lot of resources in my experience.

Happy to hear they are making progress, but I would caution people on being an early adopter. It's a tech preview only and don't screw yourself by thinking you will be able to just jump into your usual workflow without issues. Goo

Too bad, if they had it running natively I would actively consider switching back to mac. Glad to see they are making progress on the M1 port though, my team will be excited.

It doesnt feel native at all, performance and networking are very suboptimal. Haven't tested it on M1 yet, but I doubt the networking challenges will disappear.

I've seen lots of M1 benchmarks, but has anyone done a side by side comparison of what it is like to actually get work done on one? Take a conventional dockerized local dev environment and just start building stuff. How much time do yo

Google's internal tooling, and by extension the developers who blog incessantly about it after doing a brief stint there are highly overrated.

I agree, I'm using pulumi with ts and it's pretty great to be able to develop / test my deployment pipeline using the same tools as my core services.

Yeah, svelte is cool. I build apps for living and hiring a svelte dev is not going to happen. Stick to react and go hiking on the weekends with the guys in your svelte meetup.

You don't need to, just write a bash script and add it to PATH. This isn't open source, it's CS 101.

Don't do this. Slack has/will get hacked and you will either rotate your keys or not. I hope I don't use your services.

And it still doesn't have a single real vfx / design project to it's name. Gimp is the single real reason people switch back from linux to osx. It's a mediocre replacement for mainstream image processing tooling at best.

Hasura provides a similar service for graphql along with many many other features along with a enterprise tier. Worth a look if you are considering tools like this.
