And like everything else in Rust, it will forever live in the "unstable" pile of features that are required to use the language without standing on your head (looking at you, pattern matching through boxes).

I did my dissertation work on software contracts. They are generally useless: programmers won't write them, or will write them incorrectly. Moreover, the runtime enforcement dominates all but the most-expensive functions, and contracts

Unfortunately, this entire field has been superseded by LLMs. They are so much more-effective that it's absurd.

For what it's worth, the remake is faithful and careful. The menu even allows you to restore the original music (though I think the updates are awesome).

Many people are saying they did very well, but if I were trying to sell a service I'd tell people that same thing. "Sure, you did a lot of these perfectly, want to do more games that will feel satisfying" seems like a great o

The writing between the lines is that McDonald's is preparing to do away with human order-takers altogether, replacing that role with a food runner that can occasionally take an order but mostly just takes food to people's seats.

PL Theory makes you start looking at everything like a PL problem. APIs become little languages, and rich APIs become larger ones. Parsing becomes trivial, lexing even moreso, and everything sort of devolves into thinking about interpreter

It seems even worse than that: the fevered dream of of a single person, leaving behind incomprehensible 5mil+ program shaped around custom coding practices that others wouldn't understand and would struggle to modernize. (For reference

The focus on superoptimization is laughable, and puts me off on even considering the other opinions presented here. Superoptimization is such a joke in so many cases that it's basically undeployable: if it takes a days of a srever'

You have access to a hundred A100s, at a price point of ~8500 each, for $850k. If only you could have half, and spend the other half on labor.

When an incurrence of debt occurs, we say that someone incurs it. Similarly, English demands that for a recurrence relation (the source of recursion schemes and basis of the term "recursion"), we recur. "Recurse" is a ba

I think in those cases, you'll also find that those programmers use recursion, and write programs that recur -- not ones that recurse.

This is brilliant, except that one recurs -- just as one incurs debt. Recursing is a thing one does to a throne in Nethack, not something done with code.

Do people still regularly follow blogs? I haven't had a good app for this in nearly a decade, and it seems like anything that may be of interest will invariably show up on an aggregated news feed elsewhere.

The only way profile building will survive is personalized recommendations from friends. Suggestions from people I know and trust would recover a lot of the current trust erosion: "your friends X and Y both have eaten here a few times&
