If we ship all our jobs overseas we can increase profits significantly. The poor and middle class will suffer in our country, and so will our economy.

Really? Are you still buying all your stuff from China where they are standing up new coal plants every day? Just because the pollution doesn't happen here doesn't mean it doesn't happen.

I identified with this story quite a bit. I had a similar experience at a cut-throat big name tech company. It's extremely political and the business has to run extremely sharp to succeed. Hence the hightened politics and management in

it was a minor pain finding and setting up a postgres operator in k8s, but once i got it going it wasn't too horrible. are these other solutions that are more built for it significantly easier to manage?

Article is a few years old but still very much relevant today. I am a huge fan of the author's scala libraries which have been a joy to use and have been deployed to various production systems with 0 issues

I have been doing scala professionally for a decade, I have probably have 1 NPE per year on average, max. And pretty much never from an established scala lib. It's by convention not to use null - heavy use of Option, etc.

SBT has a learning curve but it also has a nice ecosystem, for example sbt-native-packager is better than its competitors in maven or gradle.

I think it's subtly insightful because a goal focuses us on the endpoint and a quest focuses us on the journey that we need to undertake to get there. But to each his or her own!

Seconded. I shudder when I think back to the "test driven development" days when I wrote so much throwaway test code. Later, you try to refactor the app and it's another 50% of effort to update all the tests. The solution is

I tend to agree. My formatting guide is the default formatter in intellij, then i choose my whitespace, brackets, newlines etc based on each situation. There is no real reason to get any more complicated than that

Great piece! I think of this as a feature. The idea of scala was to be a 'scalable' language you can do lots of things with. OOP, FP, etc. It does introduce the need for more discipline which i think your article properly addresse
