rayon is a regenerated cellulose fibre: it biodegrades. polyester is a thermoplastic polymer synthesised from petrochemicals: it doesn’t. that’s the dividing line. one breaks down in the environment, the other persists for centuries and she

textile waste, largely, is plastic waste. Nearly all of the clothes you can buy contain a decent amount of plastic (elastane, polyester etc are just nice names for plastic). in fact, I’ve been trying to buy plastic-free clothing for a few

I mean... fair point? I'm not claiming games are uniquely performance-critical. You're right that HFT, large-scale backend, and real-time systems care deeply about performance, often with far more money at stake. But those domai

Ah, I read your comment as "game devs get too much credit for this stuff and people are glorifying Casey and Jon" and ran with that, but you were just correcting the historical record. My bad. I think we're aligned on the his

I partly agree, but I think you're overcorrecting. Game developers didn't invent data-oriented design or performance-first thinking. But there's a reason the loudest voices advocating for them in the 2020s come from games: we

Would be cool to understand the tradeoffs of the various block storage implementations. I'm using seaweedfs for a single-machine S3 compatible storage, and it works great. Though I'm missing out on a lot of administrative nice-to-

You’re like, so wrong. Are we really at an age where people don’t remember that SSL was intended for many protocols, including MAIL?! Do you think email works on web technology because you use a web-client to access your mailbox? Jesus chri

I haven't used an IRC server implementation in 20 years that doesn't do host masking. (IE; cloaking of client IP addresses). That said, I'm biased as I have been running an IRC community for 22 years or so... but I prefer t

I said, from the point of view of the bootloader: signed with an untrusted certificate and unsigned are effectively the same thing. Somehow this was controversial.

thats effectively the same thing. The whole point of the majority of PKI (including secureboot) is that some third party agrees that the signature is valid; without that even though its “technically signed” it may as well not be.
