Google was really part of the second wave of successful internet businesses, including search. Yahoo was going public as Google was getting started. Inktomi was worth over 20B at some point, in fact I was there when the company had an oppor

The bicycle cafe is a job on wheels. Would you rather drive an Uber? If the hourly rate is similar it would be a less stressful job. I suspect this could pay much better if you pick your locations cleverly.

Driving in the Bay Area is much, much worse than it was in 1998 when I moved here (and it was already pretty bad compared to the 80s, I imagine). I just spent seven months looking for a house within half a mile of a BART station because min

I know companies that did the same thing, only they were not onto something big. Having customers pre-product is a good signal. I'm sure that the class of companies for which this happens have a much higher success rates than a typical

Backloaded vesting seems like a terrible idea. It puts the employee in a really vulnerable position. As a company grows, the absolute value that a given person generates should decrease relative to everyone else. The function (relative valu

"But 28 short years ago, the term [hacker] hardly existed–that is, until the Max Headroom Incident." That's blatantly incorrect. For example, the movie War Games (pretty mainstream, with Matthew Broderick) is from 1983. ht

A couple of "mistakes" that I caught while watching, thought HN might find them interesting: - There's a reference to Viagra (6:20) but it hadn't been invented yet. - The "hacking time" sequence around 10:30 co

It's not really about the technology, it's about the hook. I also started using Java when it came out, and there were two main hooks for us C/C++ coders: - write once, run anywhere. - write programs that run on web browsers (
