I've been thinking about that a lot. Greplin is supposedly working on that problem but it's impossible to sign up these days.

Posterous is an interesting one. I'd build a whole-site search function if they had a firehose-like api call, but as far as I know it's only possible to access content for an individual blog.

No problem. Do you have a REST api? :)

The winner gets a Nexus S. Too bad Instagr.am killed the unofficial api so my entry is now stale :( http://igsearch.heroku.com/

The main reason their cache was useful back then is that many pages were long gone and the links were 404s. Inktomi marketing always tried to play up our freshness compared to Google. In 1999 they had some pages in their cache that were 3-5

I was at Inktomi in the late 90s/early 2000s. We were trying to keep up with Google in terms of scale, and we could do everything they could do in terms of link analysis, relevance, etc. Objectively, our results were as good as theirs. They

I own the 13" version. I spent some time testing both at the Apple Store. I really wanted to get the 11" one, but the upper row of keys is significantly thinner. As someone who uses vim all the time, this means missing the esc key very freq

All the Python ones other than GAE are in different beta stages. I hope one of them becomes as good as Heroku, Google would be incredibly tempted to buy something like that. GAE seems designed to assimilate apps into Google rather than to s

By the way, here's another app that I hacked to test the plumbing for the contest, a (very limited) Instagr.am search: http://igsearch.heroku.com The default search is photo caption, but you can search by fields such as username or filter

It's a good question. The app would be taking up resources so it has some not-insignificant costs to us regardless of the traffic. Having said that, if an app has value and we like it I'be happy to discuss and try to work it out. Awesome ap

My app is using 25k docs. What I described in the article is very basic, the app that you can try at http://plixitank.heroku.com keeps a window of the 25k most recent items from Plixi and erases older stuff. That's enough for several hour

C, I probably still have that source code around. It was very rudimentary: an inverted index with no relevance, only AND queries (intersection of word vectors). I had the index mmap'ed because it was pretty small.

This is because many people asked us for ideas for the contest. It's a sample app built from the ground up.

First off, thanks! To answer your question: what we'd like to do is have some readily available data sources that you could select from a directory/list (a lot of people have asked for that). Right now you have to write your own listener to

Because our lawyers say so, I believe it's boilerplate for these contests. I'd be super happy to open it to everyone in the known universe but I don't know the legal implications. Happy to hear your thoughts.

You'd have to decrypt the Wikileaks insurance file first. That contest entry would be hard to top, I would be impressed :) http://www.zerohedge.com/article/who-will-be-first-decrypt-w...

You can do real-time search for anything with a live feed. Maybe not HN, but there are lots of sites that would be happy to see a better search function just to test-drive it.
