I see this more as an INvalidation test. Answering yes to those questions doesn't mean anything. Answering no to any of them is a bad sign. However, that's not very insightful.

That case it's not weird, in fact it's a relatively common pattern. See: http://zguide.zeromq.org/page:all#header-15

Gambling with money and risking death are two very different things. You're just nitpicking.

I should have called it "not as risky as most people believe" perhaps. Or "Entrepreneurs are not gladiators."

Not sure if you refer to the mode of thinking on my post, or the thinking that causes the "reinvention of the bridge." Not Invented Here would be rewriting bridge4j because you feel like it. A good software engineer does research, and inven

It's not just the comments, I'm more concerned about the submissions. Look at the front page right now, and see how many items are not "Hacker News" even with a very lax definition of "stuff that's interesting specifically to hackers." For

I take issue with the name-calling: "the people who run it are so mean..." You could say the system is corrupt, broken, blinded by self-interest, etc. There are probably all kinds of people running Hollywood, like in any other industry. The

This strikes me as a bit naïve. Hollywood can be seen as two different things: 1) An ecosystem of artists creating music, movies and TV shows. 2) A group of companies distributing and commercializing the output of the ecosystem. It's hard t

I'm not sure that's the right question to ask. In 2003, people asked "do we need another social network?" The answer was surely no. However, (speaking for myself) I do want at least one good social networking tool and at least one good sour

That concept is made up by him. I, as well as many other people, am absolutely aware of great ideas that involve painful schleps. I've discussed startup ideas with different people since the 90s. A reason to discard an idea was "that's a co

I could solve problems that are extremely unrewarding to me. Some problems are very unsexy to most people. In order to tackle those problems you must be motivated by either extreme altruism, or a belief that your odds of success are high. T

There is a simpler explanation: the perception of risk / reward for those problems is too low. Reward = how fun the work is + potential payoff (money, recognition, etc.) I don't think anyone is blind to those problems. Bill Gates is trying
