I am currently writing a tool that’s glue between network calls (downloads) and disk (saving those). Fundamentally, it has to be async. A sync version would be slower by probably two orders of magnitude, for no good reason. Real threading w

As another poster said, None is in the prelude. It’s been explicitly imported, just… implicitly so. Other than that, Rust places strong emphasis on function signatures. They override everything else, such as inferred return types from the

I love pydantic and use it whenever I can, but that decorator seems a bit misguided, no? It requires type hints anyway, by which point mypy would catch issues with types mismatches statically, before runtime. That would seem strictly more

Rust is also poison for the mind. Sweet, sweet poison. I’m currently back to Python and losing my mind about doing error handling, as well as enforcing correct usage of my library API on the call site. Doing these things well (best?) in Rus

Yep. I avoid acronyms as much as possible for that reason. They are rarely worth it. An accumulated 20 seconds saved typing is not worth the eventual 3 minute hunt towards deciphering later on.

Yes, and it’s excellent. Scored my model for €450, barely used. i7 8665, 32 GB RAM and 500GB SSD. It would have been around double that price new. This was about 4 years ago. It’s quiet, rock solid and can run just about anything I throw at

Sadly, as with all things nice, if the practice became widespread enough, it would cease to work for abundance of malicious actors.

Not qualified to answer thoroughly, but I wouldn’t use Go for anything that it’s not designed for, which is cloud infrastructure. That’s actually its slogan and it excels there. For Rust, you can likely encode most rules and transitions bet

I had wondered about this but am too green to get it. Is this the reason that in VSCode, when debugging, most variables show as basically raw bytes instead of something useful? That was very surprising to me and made debugging difficult. In

Saving offline copies simply… doesn’t work. It’s stuck at “preparing” perpetually, every time. That’s with me having a Premium subscription! Search being poor is one thing, but at least it sometimes works. Offline saving is one of the flag

Same, but note a minor version encompasses all patches since the last release as well. You could have a single feature and countless bug fixes, but it will only show up as a meagre minor bump, with a suspicious zero in the patch field.

Reading Designing Data-Intensive Applications was great in this same sense. Anything concurrency and distributed was always a mythical black box to me. It turns out, there are no real, all-encompassing solutions to these issues. It’s all tr

I got a large performance bump by increasing the number of allowed open connections from the default 5 to 20 in all clients. I’m syncing to a self hosted Nextcloud via WebDAV.

Is multi threading (always) parallelism? I never questioned this but it just occurred to me that on a single-core CPU with a single execution thread, multithreading in user code is a noop? The code will run but won’t be any faster.

Yeah, the full URL can be specified in Bitwarden clients (browser extension, mobile app) and then never touched again. The secret path only leaks if users use Bitwarden's sharing feature. It's not a "pre-shared secret" i

I am not. Working well so far. My instance is behind Caddy, behind a secret URL path. To talk to the instance, this “pre-shares secret” needs to be known first. So far I haven’t seen any abnormal hits. I’m closing in on 3 years of using it

The aversion to comments is especially painful. There is no such thing as self-descriptive code. Same with if statements. There is a point to be made about encoding logic in the type system (type-state pattern), which is great. However, enc

Exceptions are goto in disguise to some extent, as it’s forward-jumping only. An important limitation to retain structured programming in this case.
