By "fill their pockets" I mean actively engage in political corruption. The royal families relatively static wealth makes little difference in the grand scheme. The £85m figure from the crown estate mentioned in this article is 0.

How would you say democracy has been performing lately in the English speaking world? Yes, the royal family is wealthy by birth but it's a tiny fraction of national wealth and the country gets something in return e.g. stability, some s

Wouldn't it be funny if it were established no one had any free will, in a strict sense, all along. We'd still feel like we had it but know that we didn't. From this layman's emotional point of view I never really liked

The postal system runs on post codes. It's a 5-8 letter code that usually identifies 1-20 ish addresses. You usually only need a door number and and a postcode to uniquely identify an address. There is free reverse look up as well.

I'm enjoying 900Mb symmetric from G-network for 48GBP / month. It's been pretty good so far although I wonder if it'll get slow as more people join.

Rather error prone but it was starboard & larboard before the Royal Navy changed larboard to port. Although larboard related to loading so your reasoning was correct.

The opinions on consultants in the thread is largely negative and it's suggested hiring them is a sign of organisational dysfunction. If you can find information on consulting spend in annual reports you could create a "consultant

I think Color Labs was close. While I'm sure they shared a plan with VCs I remember a lot or surprise that they had raised so much cash pre-launch. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Color_Labs

Enjoying my moonlander [1] which I bought after reading about it on HN. I went the whole hog and switched to a colemak variant as well. Typing speed is still far from my peak but feel I'm on track to a longer term pay off. The configu

This is fantastic but I think you need more detail on the toilets. Just because it lacks one of the features you list doesn't mean it's useless. There are relatively few accessible places in London so you can't be too choosey

I'm up to about 30 hours of general anesthesia after a near fatal snowboarding accident left me with a spinal cord injury. I like to think how smart I'd be if I hadn't needed it!

In my limited experience these objects are complicated and unintuitive enough that it would be hard to come up with a short simple descriptive name for them. So then you are back to applying an arbitrary label, like a name!

The "haircut" on risky assets stops you leveraging it too much. I think it's about 5% for US treasury bonds. So for every 100 I want to finance I need to have 5 cash on hand. Itsuch higher for riskier assets and that keeps l

Meh, the article doesn't mention recovery rates. If a loan defaults it's not usual you are getting 0 back. Typically 30-40% is the assumed rate. That means if all the loans default then the top 30% of tranches shouldn't take
