People see them, they just don't recognise them as that thing — and they certainly don't know what they're called. You're right that CS has tonnes of ridiculous terminology, that gets in the way of learning. In Mathemati

Teaching kids to use calculators DOES increase their problem solving ability. They can produce the same result as someone using paper. If the problem's really advanced, they may have to use brackets correctly too. You teach the same lo

This! This is the first comment I've read in this thread that's dealt with the core issue. We, the world, don't need millions of people who can write a good sorting algorithm. A few thousand will do. We need millions of peopl

The headline makes a bigger deal of the Facebook thing than the interviewee does. On that point though: who's storing the most private details about their life on Facebook? Sure, they know who my best friends are and what films I like,

Not a bad shout. Not EVERY page, but if you have a five page site, you might as well pull in all five at the time, and save the other four requests later. The actual HTML is only going to add another few KB.

I've always assumed it's a kind-of safety net for people who don't want to take ultimate responsibility for their own decisions, or something. Believing in a higher power maybe gives them comfort that other things will get ta

Yeah, the author seems to be coming at this from completely the wrong angle. I don't think anyone, the FBI, Lavabit, the NSA, or the non-technical public, is under any illusion that it's fairly simple to route around the at-rest e

I presume his fee for the film will stand, and will go to his estate. Much more interesting question if you talk about an actor who isn't involved with a film at all, either because they passed away a while ago, or they're just bu

Completely agree. If this is true, I'd never want to invest in the bunch of muppets who were wasting time on this. Conversely, it's probably now RAISED the profile of the competitor, made them look like more a threat than they rea

jQuery has support for custom builds. You can drop loads of stuff you'll probably never use if you wish! I usually drop animations and the event shortcut functions. These seem pretty junky to me anyway.

I think he's saying, if in the future you want to route web traffic through a CDN, using a CNAME, instead of directly at a specific server, using an A record, you're going to struggle if you're using the root name, as you can

You mean having both serve the same content? Yeah, the downside is SEO. Google picks up both versions and labels it duplicate content. You can put a canonical meta tag on each page, but as I understand you lose a few percent of the page

Pretty cool! Worrying about where you're going to keep your planes for a year - what a problem to have! I get pretty concerned about my cats if I go on holiday.
