It's because we're running this over millions of images. We don't want to pay the startup cost each time.

We haven't tried clustering yet, but I'm keen to. Correct me if I'm wrong, but by using clustering you might end up with colors that didn't actually occur in the original design right? In our case we wanted to make sure we found colors that

We haven't really looked too deeply into existing research in this area, so I'm not sure how our approach compares. We'd still be very interested if you've got any suggestions for material to check out. One difference between our program an

Yep, you're right. It's difficult to differentiate greys that are important vs those that we don't care about. Our current solution works not too badly and gives us results that are more visually appealing, but I agree we could do better. I

If a video has captions I often prefer to watch it muted. I'm not even hearing impaired. Sound is overrated. ;-)

I really wish I could pay for free services just for the peace of mind that they'll stick around. I've got my website on Tumblr and by using their service I feel like I'm making a pretty big commitment to them, but since it's free it doesn'

Icon designers have been saying this for years. For small icons, you really want to tune every pixel. Vector sounds great in theory (infinitely scalable!) but it just ends up being a blurry mess at small sizes.

Don't get me wrong. I ask all those other questions as well. The problem is: people lie. It's the old thing where if you want to hire a juggler, don't you want to see them juggle?

I'm kind of on the fence on this. These questions might seem pretty lame, but as an interviewer it does tell you something about the candidate's level of experience with a language. If you've worked with a language for any decent amount of

Very interesting! Are you thinking something more along the lines of Python's "batteries included" style standard library? Also, it'd be great to move away from PHP's functions-in-global-namespace style standard library, towards having a se

Yes and Yes. We use async tasks at 99designs for all kinds of background tasks. It's a surprisingly useful and versatile system for a variety of things. It's a long list. :-) Our rule of thumb is basically anything that's going to take more

It's an example of using a language's idioms. If you use i in a loop, there's no need to explain yourself since there's a common understanding as to what this means.

I find that thinking about good names for things can help guide you to design better code. As Lars mentioned—if something is hard to name, it's probably because the thing you're naming isn't very clearly defined, is a bad/mixed metaphor, or
