I had a similar thought, although my reaction was more along the lines of trying to soften the blow of some draconian backdoor policy. That is, "well, what are you worried about with crippled encryption? We made it harder to get permis

I agree with you, although I think the problem is a focus on procedures rather than principles in general. It took me a long time to realize that a principled reason for gaussian parametric distributions is the maximum entropy principle. Pr

You might be right about things, but there's plenty of time. Part of the issue, for me, isn't so much what Trump has done so far policy-wise, it's the environment this is all occurring in, and what Trump is setting up and wha

Honestly, I'm not sure why there aren't calls to boycott the US airline system until this sort of thing is put to a stop. I'm horrified by Trump, but see this as just one step in a direction things have been headed for years.

Thank you, Peter, for clearing that up. We were all waiting for your rational and level-headed insight to know what to think about these sorts of matters. The language of the EO mentioned religion, but obviously if you think that's not

I voted libertarian in part because of the concerns you're mentioning about Clinton, but I think it's disingenuous to somehow imply that Trump isn't worse, or that this didn't start with the Bush administration's re

Earlier in my life, I always ended up buying Dells, mostly because they were the best purchases for me. Then at one point I needed a new laptop, and the 11-inch Air was the only one that really fit the bill hardware-wise. There was the Yoga

I heard a news report that what happened at DHHS was normal. What happened at the EPA was not. The USDA has since released some statement that there was some confusion, and the gag order email should not have gone out and was incorrect.

FWIW, I have a lot more faith in a company that allows its engineers to communicate directly with the public. If there's something in particular that should remain quiet, then that should be handled as such on a case-by-case basis. Mor

IQ is normalized, but that doesn't change the shape of the distribution. It changes the scale, but not the shape. I agree there's a lot of details that need to be done to make this more rigorous, and I was hoping that the article

If you increase the time scale, the acceleration doesn't seem so big--it looks like there's a fairly linear trend. What's interesting to me is that there's such a consistent drop in searches around the holidays. I'd

I would be ok with arguments against net neutrality except: 1. There is no competition in any given market for the most part. ISPs are defacto monopolies in most places. When the same politicians arguing against net neutrality are trying to

A couple of years ago, I went to a museum exhibition of DaVinci's notebooks. I was completely unprepared for what was my primary reaction: that DaVinci just documented every idea in his head, and that some of them just happened to pan

Not meaning to criticize your taste in subreddits, but I didn't have the reaction I thought it would. I was looking forward to it, but a lot of the posts seemed like links to megatrolling or something. Maybe I picked the wrong ones to

I sympathize with and agree with a lot of the points you're making, but think they apply in an environment that doesn't really apply anymore. Our society as a whole is trending toward a situation where I think other factors are at

I agree with you 100% about administrations being top-heavy. It's a major problem, not only because of financial reasons, but because it creates an inbalance in power structure between the people administrating and faculty. That is, it
