I set up a "sandbox" project as an early step of setting up a new PC. Sadly for certain types of projects like GIS, ML, scientific computing, the dependencies tend to be mutually incompatible and I've learned the hard way to

Search "LTT Windows Modern Standby" on YouTube. Sadly all the workarounds to turn it off no longer work reliably. For reliable sleep, buy a Framework (only current Windows laptop that still supports S3 Sleep) or Macbook.

Framework does! I think they might be the _only_ one to consistently support it.

Oh no, Windows Modern Standby is infamously terrible and unreliable. Here is a youtube video with millions of views explaining the problems in detail: https://youtu.be/OHKKcd3sx2c

Holy crap! I watch like, maybe a couple of movies a month and two or three miniseries a year? Is that including ads too? And sports/news? EDIT: Wait, are these "average person" or "average American?"

Yup, deep archive on <2TB, which is more content than most people watch in a lifetime. I mostly store content in 1080p as my vision is not good enough to notice the improvement at 4K.

The retrieval cost is less than 1 hour of my time and I expect less than 10% chance I'll ever need it.

Having to restore my media server without a backup would cost me around a dozen hours of my time. 2 bucks a month to back up to Glacier with rclone’s crypt backend is easily worth it.

The short version is: - Distributing patches via email is more scalable than web hosting. Even GitHub could not host the level of activity happening on the LKML mailing list - Web hosting has a variety of access and legal problems when work

They're hiring for roles that look like cloud and infrastructure engineers- although that may be for internal infrastructure for training their models.

Postgres as a queue is one of the worst decisions I've seen made and I and others I've worked with have spent years of our lives unwinding the consequences.

I wouldn't call it lightweight, but for an adventure bike it's certainly accessible.

Niche? We must live in different places. Where I live dual sports are probably the most popular bikes after Harleys. All the kids in my neighborhood are getting Surrons instead of gas dirt bikes.

I've ridden long distances around US and usually if you've got 120 miles of gas range, you're fine pretty much anywhere on pavement, even in that very long stretch of no services in Utah. Off road of course is another univers

I daily commuted on a 300cc for a long time and yeah, the extra power is very handy on US highways. I find at least 70hp is a nice sweet spot, and everything above that is mostly for putting a grin on your face for a solo rider.

Yamaha Niken. Ducati also does some really cool stuff with their bike tech, but doesn't market it as much as the other brands, preferring their exotic brand image.

My F750GS is such an easy bike to live with. It's one of those products that on paper seems boring compared to the competitors but when you actually use it every day you see why it's nice.

The flash could be a white LED. Apple has some other devices which require another device for setup, so it wouldn't be unusual for them. They could also offer setup at an Apple store.
