The one that always gets me is security and privacy paranoid and lecture me on the Stasi and using Apple phones and how they aren't repairable but then goes and uses unpatched rotten old Android they can't fix anyway and sticks fi

I was doing that until Adobe decided to start using an API which is not present in 2021 LTSC. So I moved to macOS. Tahoe has its problems but it and the hardware makes a mockery of Windows 11 and PCs generally.

All products seem to decline the moment the revenue model switches to monthly recurring. This is always contrary to the promise that they won't and that money will be invested in product improvements. If you think it's bad now wai

Reality: LLMs allow you to assemble shitty frustrating stacks quickly. That's creating a new inefficient, socially destructive, environmentally damaging hammer because solving the real problem doesn't sell well. I'll be happy

About 25 years here and 10 years embedded / EE before that. The problem is that containers are made of images and those and kubernetes are incredibly stateful. They need to be stored. They need to be reachable. They need maintenance. A

Time to market and operational costs are much higher on kubernetes and containers from many years of actual experience. This is both in production and in development. It’s usually a bad engineering decision. If you’re doing a lift and shift

Yeah this. As I explain many times to people, processes are the only virtualisation you need if you aren’t running a fucked up pile of shit. The problem we have is fucked up piles of shit not that we don’t have kubernetes and don’t have con

Our lot burns a fortune on snowflake every month but no one is using it. Not enough data is being piped into it and the shitty old reports we have which just run some SQL work fine. It looked good on someone’s resume and that was it. They a

There are also some absolute morons out there. Couple of local things around me... First I went to one of the local town planning meetings in my area when they were rolling out FTTC. This one was due to a rather old person objecting to the

That always hurts. I live in a particularly nice bit of London and there is virtually no mobile phone service other than voice and can only get 80 meg ADSL. Yet the mole people get better service. Grr.

I went from a T490 to a T14 gen 3 (Intel). Was a nice upgrade. The GPU sucks, which I don't need or care about, but the rest is fine. I got a NOS one for a reasonable amount of money. The X1 looks nice but colleagues had thermal issues

I rather liked the T-series (had quite a few!). But Lenovo are really running out of good will as far as I am concerned. They're riding the brand to destruction. Had some serious problems recently including one brick and one out of war

Yeah everyone suffered that side of things for sure. I'd rather have location recorded but not leaked out to whoever sold me the phone personally. I don't sync any files to the cloud already.

Yeah that. Some ethics and management training programmes leveraged it because they thought it was popular. I still have a dilbert ethics training certificate somewhere as a reminder of how fucked up corp culture is. American corp in Europe

The battle I am fighting at the moment is that our glorious engineering team, who are the lowest bidding external outsourcer, make the LLM spew look pretty good. The reality of course is they are both terrible, but no one wants to hear that

Not really. I've been around a while. Git for about 15 years. Subversion before that. Perforce before that. rcs before that (back down to sun3 machines). Mostly Fossil now for personal things. What I am saying is that people learn as m

Not a chance. I think you need to spend some time in low ball corporate IT. It's just monkeys throwing faeces at the wall. We only just levered them off subversion... (I use Fossil 100% offline for personal projects for ref)

Yep that much. 64Gb DDR5 ECC sticks (128Gb don't exist at the moment apparently). They declined the PO 6 months ago. That'll teach 'em. I was pissed that there weren't any sticks heading to the recycling out of the nodes

Based on recent events, I wouldn't suggest a constitution makes much of a difference to an adversarial government.
