I’m reminded of a similar online NY Times piece I read, years ago, I think by a woman named Gladys, which was entirely about the harrowing process of procrastinating on, and eventually writing, the piece. All I could think was, poor Gladys

Most Jepsen reports seem to find glaring flaws, including subsystems that add complexity while reducing correctness, like the “auto-retry” features here, or novel consensus schemes that just aren’t airtight and therefore technically don’t w

Yup. In a codebase without static types, large-scale refactors are probably just not practical, which may be why fans of dynamic types don't have this problem; they can't, and thus don't, do substantial refactors without rew

Call me a critic, but I don't see any "realistic transitions"? I mean, the positions of the limbs are continuous, barely. Stopping is very jerky. Sometimes the dog does a sort of "downward dog" pose for a long ti

If you need a rich text editor, I would just plug in a framework-agnostic rich text editor (e.g. ProseMirror).

Can you summarize the insights you have had beyond what the paper covers? Sounds fascinating. I don’t know why people aren’t more actively pursuing this stuff, either.

I’ve had trouble finding those systems or algorithmic jobs too, like the grandparent, where some kind of engineering quality matters, be it performance or correctness or something. Everyone wants to hire a “full-stack engineer” to write ap

Static types are great because they make certain classes of bug impossible to write, but they have their limits. There are escape hatches, like casts and Object types, even in statically-typed languages, though fewer of them in languages w

I can see why someone who stumbles on Skip would classify it as "systems-ish": General-purpose statically-typed language that compiles to native code with an emphasis on being fast with predictable performance. Go is thought of a

This is the clearest presentation of why CAP is misleading that I’ve ever seen! Wonderful. If the app programmer knows they don’t have global consistency, just consistency per partition, I wonder if in practice there are ways to achieve th

While that's basically true, git grep doesn't scale... With ever-cheaper RAM, ever-faster SSDs, and cloud computing, it could actually make sense, now or soon, to scan through an entire repo, either on "disk" or in RAM.

It is a real cultural problem how engineers get more excited about machine learning than basic usability. GitHub search can't even search for a literal string, let alone a regex. It can't search a subdirectory. Ranking is indist

Is IPFS really a store, let alone a store with any particular performance or availability properties? If I want to be sure a file is available, don’t I have to host it or pay someone to host it? And if I want to make sure it is geo distri

Brains don’t solve problems by manipulating symbols. None of these layers are intended to be synonymous. Meditation is basically 4 and 1, with 2 and 3 coming and going. Driving is intended to be an example of just 1 and 2. Saying that d
