Trauma is the consequences of abuse and ongoing lack of safety, in the body. It’s always been around. I think the use of public spaces to discuss, integrate, and heal people’s personal trauma is relatively new in our culture? Something l

Having a toxic job is not a sign of extreme privilege. Nor is facing a trade-off between having income and taking care of one’s mental or physical health.

These problems have lots of other well-known solutions. For large objects: Persistent data structures with path-copying. Batching small mutations (and using mutation internally in a way that doesn’t leak out). Using the type system someho

Get in touch with why you are doing what you are doing, and what you really want. If you want to save money, you definitely can. Maybe you could think about what that money could be used for. There are plenty of other benefits to prepari

The amount of autonomy that makes something a “person” has only ever been drastically understated in these sorts of discussions, I find. Like saying a future self-driving taxi would own its own business and keep its profits. That’s like g

If you haven't encountered this browser before, I find it fascinating. It's meant for devices that aren't necessarily computers. For example, someone making a digital "sign" can use HTML and CSS, or dynamic HTML m

Interesting. What language is a good example of having effect sets? Koka? What about the case of needing context like “correlation id,” from the article? Can that be modeled as an effect?

Have you heard of a guy named Paul Graham? Obviously the advice “start a start-up” has some caveats, but this is Hacker News, I mean this whole site/community started with the idea that “hackers” should just start start-ups, for simila

To be clear, I was advocating against the “individual or collective action is pointless” position on climate change. I do think people should be thinking, talking, and acting, if they want!

It’s a fascinating article, but it lacks respect for people taking principled positions about this social issue. Progressives are fad-chasing sheep, supposedly, while anarchists are legit, but crazy. It’s like the Jordan Peterson philosoph

Yeah, all the positions people are taking (progressives, anarchists) about work, here, are in the right direction from the status quo. But saying that wouldn’t fit with the author’s “aesthetic.” :)

I think the real insight here is the calendar: it sounds like new tasks go straight onto the calendar, and that's how a to-do backlog is avoided! Interesting.

In the examples given, there is an existing pipeline from the “raw” input (CCD or unfused sensor data) to a simpler or less idiosyncratic thing (RGB pixel grid, position in space). The point seems to be, you still have a design choice to m

I agree. To the people saying it’s not tech: It’s not as if AirBnB or DoorDash created new technology. There definitely are start-ups in the areas listed above, but I’d like to see more household names. Investors invested $25 billion into

I don't think extraverts need any feeling of obligation to go to a party, that's just their version of curling up alone with a book. In my experience, the most striking difference between extraverts and introverts is that extraver

I agree. Also, avoiding Clojure’s collections entirely is a great way to get better performance, but it’s hard to argue that is idiomatic. This applies doubly to ClojureScript.
