Well, the divergence of China and Taiwan is a natural comparison.

I don't know of any teams that will not ask you to write code on a whiteboard for an SDE position.

This undertaking seems like a huge investment in time & overhead for only 64 servers. My guess is that with this move, performance will go up and availability will go down. I can understand the need for performance but if it were my bu

You can read about what constitutes a region in the AWS documentation, and it's not one building downtown. Full disclosure: I work there.

It won't affect latency to any bucket in any other region. But if you create an S3 bucket in Montreal then you should have excellent latency to that.

There is no single answer - AWS isn't a single hosting service, but instead more of a "parts bin" that you can use to build simple or complex services. I don't think it's what you're looking for in this case.

Yes it is possible. For example, uniformly randomized ports and addresses are a signature - if you study real traffic you find it doesn't look like that. A lot of smart people have spent a lot of time thinking about this problem.

Well the CLI gives you a job ID that you can use to check on the status and retrieve when it's ready. You can also ask to be notified by SNS. http://docs.aws.amazon.com/cli/latest/reference/glacier/

You mean "egress", and that's only helpful in cases where the source is in fact spoofed. With a large and widely distributed number of small devices, there isn't much of a need.

To be fair, the discussion is about corporate offices and not DCs. Amazon may build DCs out of town for servers but they build skyscrapers downtown for people.

Scaling vertically only buys you time until you are forced to scale horizontally. That and "one huge server" is rarely the best design decision.

I would assume they wouldn't put any DC on a flood plain.
