I had a surprisingly positive experience with Gemini optimizing some mathy MPS code. It did far better than claude. Of course, when I tried it on something else it rewrote every line in the file for no good reason, applied changes directly

Do we really care if an LLM regurgitates information already available in public about the design of nuclear weapons? They're not being trained on restricted material. (My personal guess is that you don't want them answering quest

Oh, I dunno - I haven't downvoted it, but if I did, it would be for the idea that you "have to" give money to someone you don't want to just for a slight improvement. That's garbage. You don't have to. It'

Openat appeared in Linux in 2006 but not in FreeBSD until 2009; go started being developed in 2007. It probably missed the opportunity by a year. It would have been the right thing to change the os module at some point in the last 18 years,

No, I just pre-fill a cup with hot water from the steam wand (it has a hot water mode) and then pull a double shot of espresso into it. (That's technically an Australian long black but I like it better - it leaves the crema on top.)

Most modern ethernet chips, including those used on USB ethernet devices, have adaptive interrupt coalescing (or moderation) for network I/O, which renders this likely not as big a deal as it once was. There will still be limits on pac

As others have noted, urban gas stations are likely to be far less busy in an EV world due to the ease of distributed charging -- home, work, destination, etc.; But I think you raise a good model for long-haul. I think of the pennsylvania t

What's nice there, though, is that the total amount of _energy_ needed at a charging station is roughly fixed( ), regardless of how fast you charge the cars. So if you're provisioned for the needed total energy inflow, you can to

If you get 400km per charge using 88% of the battery (98% -> 10%), that's 400,000km (258,000 miles) before you're down to 90%, at which point you have likely worn out an awful lot of other things with the car. Admitting that I

I think it's less about blaming us for boycotting Tesla and more about blaming us for letting our entrenched interests in both oil extraction and ICE cars prevent us from investing in EV development and switching to them faster.
