clz is faster in almost all contexts. There are some times when you're doing these operations in large vector types (like AVX), in parallel, when falling back to the SWAR techniques can actually be faster because of limited bandwidth o

This does punish the researchers - no citations, no publication to list in their cv. It hits them where they almost certainly care a lot. Absent cooperation from their home institution, the journals don't have much other leverage.

I do. Mostly from curiosity about which way Google will suggest I go; sometimes because the traffic or road-closure awareness is useful. Though it's often the case that I know about the road closures before it does -- but sometimes it

The amount of material in solar panels is tiny compared to our other landfill-destined refuse streams, and it needs to be compared to the analogous waste streams from other forms of energy generation. Nuclear creates long term storage needs

They can be recycled; currently at a cost of about $18/panel, which isn't great (landfilling is cheaper), but there's reason to think that cost can drop some as they improve the process. https://www.renewableenergy

Oh my god, the Internet is such a small place. Good to hear you're doing well - we interacted a bit when I was running an ISP in the 90s as well. (Dave Andersen, then at ArosNet -- we ran a lot of PM2.5e and then PM3s). And appreciate

The irony is that his solution has an unnecessary log(n) term, because it's finding each point independently instead of taking advantage of the fact that the input points are also a dense grid. ;) so it can probably run 2-10x faster th

This is a bit pessimistic. Most STOC papers don't directly give an incredibly practical algorithm. But what they do give is insight, and that insight can often be used to improve the practical state of the art. And new bounds get you t

Depends. Sometimes turkey prices drop before thanksgiving, as the producers plan their growth cycles around expected thanksgiving demand, and use freezers to meet demand. For example, see the 2022 august peak in poult placement in: https:&

The other definition you got isn't bad, but I think it misses the point for this discussion: it is a rack or multi rack scale computer with built-in and centrally managed features for redundancy, failover, job allocation, scaling, etc.

Engine braking does the same thing. It just applies resistance by using the engine instead of by using the brakes. Whether the slowing force is transmitted by the axle or the brakes is irrelevant to tire wear.

I found that kind of funny too. Beats me. :) This is my first one with a self-empty base and I'm surprised how much I like it. I don't think the pre-mapping self-empty units would have worked very well for me because they would us
