I'm a programmer, so desktop support/management is out of my purview. I just spoke with one of our IT staff, though, and she confirmed what you state here. She said that in my department, support is close to zero because developers are be

What I mean is this: if a computer is used to process or access very sensitive data, then the user of that computer cannot have as much leeway as other users. It's possible, and sensible, to have flexible policies depending on business usa

Ok, your advice is almost good. If you could just excise the "fresh pussy," bit... Only 2% of news.yc users in the self-reported survey were women, and this is kind of why.

This looks like a FUD rant to me. I work for an organization (thousands of employees/higher ed) that has zero restrictions on what programs you can install and use on your computer. For example, I use Thunderbird instead of Outlook. It wo

Ok, now I see why we should stay away from politics on HN. Too many people are downvoting/upvoting based on their political perceptions of TK. Do you really need to downvote someone into the negative for simply saying they liked the guy?

And you know many of these lazy women! In fact, all the American women you know are just like that! This is so far-fetched, so unlikely a scenario, that you have to see how ridiculous you're being. Unless you have their balanced checkbook

How does a working parent contribute nothing to a marriage?

It is difficult to see oneself repeatedly characterized as such without getting one's dander up a bit. My suspicion is that his friends probably love their wives, and he's using their occasional and exaggerated venting to support his weird

In the course of this discussion, you have indicated that the men you know married women who do nothing, contribute nothing to the marriage, and somehow expected the men to give them half of everything, despite the fact that they are bitchy

Practical Common Lisp ( http://www.gigamonkeys.com/book/ ) is a pretty good book, that covers these things. Accessible, practical material is definitely out there, but some kind of sea-change will have to occur before it goes "mainstream."

"Hacker-style," doesn't mean completely abandoning all planning and thoughtfulness. It means rapid prototyping, sure, and (of course) constant refactoring, not a constant deluge of slapdash quick fixes. What you inherited was a garden vari

Hardly. Marginally clever, but unhelpful, answer. Young children are generally placed in daycare or with extended family, then the public schools. That's how I grew up, and I'm ok.

Congrats! Good luck, have fun. As someone who has happily chosen to raise her children in Cambridge, we all do what we think is best for our kids. Suburbia is not for us; Huron Village is about as suburban as I can stand. :)
