Fantastic write-up! Put this on our data engineering reference article list. I am just curious - are you using Provisioned IOPS? If so what value? Noticed in your metrics your Queue Depth was pegged around 15-20 on average. According to AWS

How would I know if it is a lie? Until that is elucidated - anecdote is perfectly sufficient for speaking informally. I notice you also left out (conveniently) the 2nd definition: "an account regarded as unreliable or hearsay."

You are also assuming that the brain is the origin of consciousness as we know it. And not just a "reducing engine" for an external "signal" - as Aldous Huxley suggests in his Mind at Large concept: https://en

Heard a similarly strange anecdote from consciousness researcher Anthony Peake on a podcast recently: He was was sitting in a cafeteria eating lunch with a female friend who has a seizure disorder. During the meal, this friend went into a &

Silly question ahead but I am honestly curious: How did you come up with the name? Has anyone seen your name and associated it with SkyNet / The Terminator Franchise?

Check out any books / articles relating to the Marine Corps' "The Basic School" - It is where newly commissioned officers (and warrant officers) learn how to lead Marines. My fav is: "One Bullet Away: The Making of

I am with you on this - it is what causes me a lot of anxiety but what also drives me to at least know about "all the shiney things" that the new breed of engineers basically come equipped with standard.

To share me / and things that keep me up at night: I am an old geek - (34 now - i guess)... I still need to work the 12 hour days in order to keep up with my day job AND to keep up with new technologies and the literature via Pluralsig

You know - you are absolutely right. I am ashamed to admit that I let my expertise get in the way of my common sense here. I will keep that in mind on all my comments going forward.

Really? I don't. I don't find that something which is common knowledge - that poaching + habitat loss is the single driving force behind the loss of African (and other) megafauna - to be news. We (zoologists) have known this for a

Thanks for that interesting history - had no idea that corruption was that high up the chain. But I do also second your question: Why is this on HN? It is pretty common knowledge that overhunting + poaching and poor game management are the

This is cool. We have particular problems with English vs. British spelling for medical terminologies. We have a lookup table for these and other synonyms: e.g.: "Haemorrhage" vs. "Hemorrhage" etc

How should the average researcher go about replicating something like 3-5 clinical trials that a drug company may have run for a human drug? Should we replicate all that work? Or perhaps just obtain the raw, patient-level data from said com
