Screen real estate is like a drug. Addiction creeps up on you quickly, and the more you have the more you think you need. I used to be perfectly content with one 17" monitor. Now I'm looking for a bigger desk so that I can add a fourth 2

Up to a point, avoiding whitespace does gain you something. It means you can fit more code on the screen at one time. In languages with C-like syntax, I've taken to putting consecutive close-braces on the same line, at the indentation

I wish it had more glyphs, though. I like typing math symbols into my code comments. Terminus can't display them.

DH without authentication still fends off a large class of attackers. Spoofing IPs is hard. Typing 'tcpdump' is easy.

Just plain-old username and password. Before launch I'll experiment with running everything over SSL, but it might turn out to be too much overhead for a bunch of tiny AJAX requests. If so, then I'll keep the session in cleartext but do s

Really? That is a lot. I noticed a factor of two when I moved from CLisp to SBCL, and I was under the impression that CLisp is generally the slowest implementation.

How do you interact with your REPL? SBCL is designed around SLIME. I find it virtually unusable without it.

I think Haskell is overall terser than Ruby. The trouble with the accgen test is that it's imperative, and Haskell isn't meant to be. Here's the Haskell implementation that I would submit: putStrLn "Don't do that, you nimwit!"

Right now Valleywag is the only killfile-worthy offender that I can think of, but yes, it would be useful.

I just can't seem to learn my lesson about not bothering to click on Valleywag links with provocative titles. Anyone with more time their hands than I want to write a Greasemonkey script to hide them? You can call it Valleywhack.

I can't speak statistically, but the one I work for now does and the one I'm about to start will too (but in the latter case I'm writing a DBMS, so that's kind of a pathological example). If all your content is human-generated and O(n) in s

The solution to this is simply to add the site to your outgoing firewall until you've gotten a good day of productive work done. Afterwards you can remove it and your usage will hopefully return to normal. It worked for me, at least.

What do you plan to do differently from the likes of Google Answers that would allow you to deliver on the 60-minute timeframe more often than they did?

Pedantically you're correct, but on what archictecture/compiler is (sizeof int) != (sizeof size_t), and in what circumstances have you seen this become a vulnerability? (I'm not trying to be argumentative here; I'm legitimately curious.)
