There are some tools that can help with this, such as Findbugs, for java. Obviously it can't find any bug but it matches against certain patterns to determine if some anti-patterns exist in a project.

You can gain experience just working on your own small projects, if you aren't making money from something then there's no reason you need to work for someone else, you can gain experience on your own.
