It has not been my experience that web applications are I/O bound using typical architectures in Python. I think you would have a very hard time arguing that Node.JS is more performance than nginx.

I'm using ES6 in strict mode with a linter and Babelify to transpile for browser compatibility and I stand by what I said. I've been writing JavaScript since there was JavaScript to write, and the situation has improved drasticall

I would choose Flask over Meteor any day. JavaScript is the unholy union of various browsers introducing hacks which are then standardized by committee. Considering that's the design process, it actually is pretty well done. But there&

Python 2.7 will be around for a while due to legacy code, but it's only a matter of time before Python 3.x is more widely used. Don't invest time learning skills that will only dwindle in value. Some stuff is broken in the ecosyst

It's a natural consequence of the former being typically written by more experienced developers than the latter.

The "gap between CSS and JS" you are describing is called "decoupling" and it exists because the designers of CSS/HTML/JS have generally been experienced enough developers to know how bad of an idea it is to co

When Turkle describes her clients' concern, it's a concern with quality of interaction, not quantity. The studies mentioned later deal with quantity: people who text more spend more time with friends. I don't blame the resear

If you were robbing people and paying no taxes I'd want the government to do something about it. Likewise when the rich rob everyone and pay no taxes I want the government to do something about it.

You realize that if the rich paid the same percentage of their income that you pay, you'd pay drastically less taxes? And that a lot of your taxes go to the evil rich?

That's entirely perception with no basis in reality. A million users who make you $10 each are worth the same as 10 users who make you $1 million each. It's worth it for Twitter and its investors to track users so they can see ho

I do think that there is good reason to make these decisions intentionally i.e. don't drive species extinct by accident. But I'm not sure that an intentional thought process should lead to different conclusions. It depends on what

C build and link errors are only one of a myriad of issues that one can have with packaging. I've had far more problems with badly-managed packages in pure Python than with stuff like PIL. And one only has to look as far as JavaScript

Yes, the waiving of medical fees sometimes happens, but "financial need" is a pretty high bar to meet. I was saddled with around $10K of medical debt after a bike accident a few years back when I was unemployed because a) I had

This brings up a major problem I see in the future of AI: if strong AI is exclusively the property of large corporations it will give corporations even more power over ordinary citizens. Strong AI has the potential to empower people but if

Total rewrites are almost always the wrong move. It may be true that they meet their stated objectives, but some of those objectives could have been achieved without a rewrite, and some of those objectives don't make sense. I've w

Describing him as a 10x developer makes me even more skeptical of the decision to switch. Developers who deliver 10x as many features inherently do so at the cost of maintainability.

Have you tried writing "a quick little server" in Python and deploying it? Packaging and deployment aren't problems in Go OR Python if you're only solving trivial problems. With a larger project, you might have an easier
