I never said Python was perfect. I consider it seriously flawed in many respects. I'm not defending Python as a perfect language. I'm just saying this "flaw" doesn't make any sense as such. If you want to tell me that with some perspective

Really? You're calling Python a messed up programming language because ten years ago it got lexical scoping? I don't know about Ruby, maybe it's had a rougher road, but that's really the only scoping rule change Python got. It got an additi

Dean Kamen looks like he could be on the way to being a proper heroic inventor. Although people will always make fun of him for Segway. :)

Very much relevant to anybody who found this interesting: http://www.amazon.com/Godel-Escher-Bach-Eternal-Golden/dp/04... I found it in a used bookstore for $5 once, totally by accident. It's probably the best nonfiction book I've ever st

Not really. Actually I think the GP was mistaken. The big reason gamers don't want 24FPS is because if it's 24FPS during normal play, it's gonna stutter. There will be times when it goes down to, say, 12 FPS, if not lower. And 12 FPS is sim

The Dune miniseries was wonderful. I watched it as a kid and never got over it. It's a very nostalgic thing for me. Maybe it doesn't match up to the book, but if I ever read the book it would only be because of the miniseries and comments t

Pretty easily. If it's distracting or somehow bad for me, because of the aesthetics, I could dislike it for logical reasons. If I open up a law firm and then the decorator puts a gigantic mural of H.R. Giger's work on the walls, I'd probabl

Static typing is like a helmet that forces a speed limit, too. It won't necessarily help you experiment faster-- the common wisdom is that it does the opposite, in Java/etc. style static typing.

Sorry for the lack of clarity. I meant that the form of presentation should be useful for aiding understanding, not coincidental. I didn't mean to implythat the content itself should be useful (in the sense that it has practical application

So well spent that it didn't even feel like 20 minutes. This is what videos should be like-- not essays delivered more slowly and painfully, but real useful things presented visually in a way that takes full advantage of the medium.

Yes, absolutely. A project I've wanted to run with for a bit is writing a Scheme implementation in PyPy. It would provide a wonderful way to better learn the parts of Scheme I don't know, and use Scheme alongside Python code (which is nice,

PyPy's sandboxing hasn't been as thoroughly analyzed and tested as, say, Javascript's (not by far) or Java's, but the actual construction is simpler and arguably better. The PyPy devs, at least, are fairly convinced of its robustness. Basic

The Junk Science site is scary, because it's so close to the truth. You really shouldn't take "may" or "possibly" as a statement of fact, and it's true that statistics can be used to manipulate facts and present false ideas. And yet muc
