I do. It's hard enough to bring people out of closed OSes while Ubuntu is free. I still think Canonical should do like many successful startups these days: make a large userbase and only then start to deploy the business model. We're not go

It makes a lot of sense to use the subreddits to provide targeted ads. Being seen as friendly with goodwill notice for visitors might also be part of this. Still, that remains one of the least agressive revenue models I've seen.

I think most of us realize it. But we also realize that the reward is so large that it counters the small probability to make a pretty high expectancy, above a regular programmer salary. Let's say one startup out of the, say, ten thousand o

Wow, they're at 20 already? At that rate, they'll reach Firefox 100 in a decade. Frankly, it sounds quite ridiculous.

God forbid. At least Microsoft didn't control our hardware. If Apple gets the same kind of monopole as Microsoft over computers, tablets and smartphones, they would basically control the entire field of technology. As for the prices, people

Worth the cost of asking for more information for the replacement of expensive items? It just takes a few more seconds to each rep and is surely shorter than all the new orders being placed for scammers.

Yep, make that an opt-in feature, add some light ads, and you have a full business model. I believe they may have just wanted to spare themselves the headache of a money system and of people who would reupload other people's pictures or cop

I think it's more about how they sold the company while the application was still not making any money. People expected to have to pay one day, of course, but by selling the users without the business model, Instagram showed it didn't care

Indeed. Arrogant people get their requests fulfilled more often than humble people because they push for it, and many people who have the power to give that stuff are either arrogant and depise humble people or humble and intimidated. It's

If it's just the 50Hz frequency, it's easy to make a cheap application with a GUI that computes the FFT of a wav file, replaces the value at 50Hz using some straightforward parameters (e.g home/suburban street/city center) and IFFT back to

It's niche enough to not justify the hundreds of millions of dollars such a project would require and the high risks. OSX "just works" because it has a full suite of software that comes loaded on it and "just works" very well and makes a lo

I doubt that these people know anything about technology. The governments generally hire some companies to do the obscure technology "magic" thing. As for people, most of them have probably never learned a thing about the technologies they

Actually, it's all about slowing innovation, so it can very well be used as "enforcing bogus patents": Apple is famous for recently suing competition over abstract ideas. They don't even try to hide that fact.

For Google, I don't truly have a choice because there is no serious competitor for both the quality and the privacy, so I just ticked a.). For Ubuntu, a.) and b.). Shuttleworth's childish attitude is shocking.

You imply that "the community" changed opinions... but "the community" is not a person. It's not necessarily minds that change rather than the people. The readers of HN are the teenagers of yesterday, who have never stopped disliking Apple.

Agreed. We're not used to see modern works reused freely because it has never happened. But with an open mind, I can easily see it. 28 years after your death, the world well deserves to finally use your work.

Any idea if this exists for Firefox? I've been looking for it for a while. It's the major feature I miss from Chrome. I've had enough of Ctrl-C, Ctrl-T, Ctrl-V.

I think the AJAX thing is just because 7 to 10 years ago, AJAX was not called AJAX (the term was coined in 2005). As for Javascript, it is by far the easiest to implement online, so it's good for a prototype. I don't think it's supposed to
