This is cool technology. The first thing I thought was, that looks a lot like the building that contains the Dead Sea Scrolls (1). This was also designed to stay cool in the desert. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shrine_

Oh yeah, chrome. I was thinking the anti-block was tied to my account since clearing cookies and updating ublock's filter list didn't fix it, but I'll give firefox a try.

It doesn't for me - first I got warning popups, and eventually videos wouldn't load at all. I found a different extension called Ad Speedup that basically plays ads at infinite speed, so the ad's first frame loads, but then t

Angkor Wat isn't the only temple around Siem Reap, though. I agree that standing around with hundreds of people waiting for the sun to come up, then all crowding inside at the same time isn't the best experience. But on that same

That's the 'how', not the 'why'. I think biological incentive here means, the reason human evolution retained certain traits. An interesting theory for that is that gays and lesbians can cooperate with their sibling

But the goods being bought with the credit cards went up 8%. Consider before: Bob bought thing X for $100 before and then paid Y% interest on that debt. Now he buys it for $108 and pays (Y+4)% interest. It’s more expensive all around, even

A lot of good things happened (could add womens suffrage too) but there was also supreme court endorsement of eugenics (Buck v Bell 1927). Then Woodrow Wilson’s Espionage Act during WW1. In Schenck v US and Debs v US, the supreme court uphe

Nope, there will just be 2^8 tables (constant overhead per table) each with 2^24 24-bit keys. If you start with an array of any N keys, they have 32N bits of information. But once you insert them all into an unordered set like this, you thr

I think Visual Studio at the time could inline functions - VS 6.0 from 1998 definitely could: http://www.cs.cmu.edu/~rbd/doc/optcode.htm . Especially if explicitly marked 'inline', then it would happen at

Depends on how long to sustain - 0.5 HP is 373 watts, which is more than male pros sustain over a whole race stage but less than some can do for ~10 minute sections. [1]( https://cyclingtips.com/2017/06/just-how-goo

On some derailleurs, you can remove a pulley to get the chain off as a closed loop. Still a pain, but in my case would save a $5 master link that isn’t supposed to be reused at all (sram 12 speed).

There was a really great short story by Ted Chiang about this concept (finite communication between forks): https://onezero.medium.com/anxiety-is-the-dizziness-of-freed... . I found it from an HN post a couple months ago.

Nothing, they are just drawing and shading quads as a practical GPU benchmark. Each pixel could be shaded with a pseudorandom color generated as the hash of its screen coordinates.

That's pretty much what I meant by the matrix exponentiation method - applying the map (a, b) -> (a+b, a) repeatedly. Your function definitely uses tail calls, but I was just trying to say more than tail call optimization is needed

This isn't really related to your question, but I don't think tail calls could help for Fibonacci since f(n) branches to two calls, f(n-1) and f(n-2). And each of those branches into 2. So it can't be done in a finite stack a

Reading this article was a surprise for me, I didn't know of this issue at all. But this is pretty ridiculous. If it's possible to write scanf, which matches chars from a stream, why can't sscanf just do the exact same thing

For shorts and trading on margin that all makes sense, but I still don't get why that would prevent retail investors from buying regular shares with their own cash. Where does the broker assume risk in that transaction? Edit: nrmitchi

Shorts aren't options, they don't have expiration dates. You can hold a short indefinitely just by paying interest on the borrowed share value when you entered the position. You can even keep the short from being forcibly closed d
