Interesting, had the opposite experience. Homebrew does almost everything very nicely for me. Macports not as much, although to be fair this was years ago.

I didn't take a deep dive of the code but in order to train it's going to need to be fed audio files with the actual video/mouth shapes/etc. Essentially it needs it to tell the reward to give back (if it was right). Once

It's one of those things that is incredibly useful. Of course it's possible to survive without it, but it's like saying "I don't know how people program without Copy and Paste". It helps.
