Complexity probably has something to do with it. Every surgery is slightly different. So a reasonable size checklist would be missing enough items to kill the patient, and a complete one, the patient dies before you are 1% through it.

I'm trying to figure out why this article says paper wasn't expensive, using the example that a laborer could by 75 sheets of paper for a day's wages. Today, I can by 5 times that amount, for about 10 minutes of wages. By t

Think of the Google search results page. Currently, you have to scroll the content, then do another action to go to the next page of results, then scroll again, etc. Very tedious to quickly scan through the items. So infinite scroll woul

I care more about vertical resolution, and vertical height, more than about aspect ratio. So with 3k and 4k getting more popular on higher end laptops, the 16:9 doesn't bother me as much. I can keep a code window on one side and docu

You know, conduit is less than $3.50 for a 10 ft section last I bought some. Fittings are another dollar or so each, and I can't see 30 ft of copper wire costing 2 grand. So you are paying mostly for the electrification's time.

Most car owners have no problem renting a vehicle on a trip, at least when they fly out somewhere. Trips almost 100% renting (hotel room, chef services [restaurants], seat on the plane, car, limo to/from airport). Once in that mindse

I have similar experience with my hybrid, compared to my previous paid-off F150. Although still a gas car, the cost savings of driving it (gas, plus oil changes are half as often) pays for about 80% of my car payment. My next car in anothe

I sometimes feel like I have a leg up based on when I learned computers (self taught mid 80's to early 90's). At that time, everything was more low level, and there were fewer, yet higher quality books on the market. So I starte

For "food deserts", this can be fixed by requiring places to offer a good selection of quality healthy items in order to be able to accept food stamps. This will work, as long as the food stamp based income is significant enough

Not only that, but it is interesting to see the multiplier effect of those overhead funds. If a charity redistributes 90% of donations to their cause, can they raise twice the amount of money by increasing their overhead by 5%? It is well

The problem is that batteries are too expensive, too heavy, and they wear down eventually. Not only is there the market demand, but there is also the fears of consumer backlash if they don't (or can't) get it 150% correct. Remem

I thought it was more like 400 million years between water and the first life -- and that is the oldest life we have evidence of. It could conceivably take a couple hundred million years for life to go from the initial spark, to having evo

Even though we have only one datapoint, I wonder how much can be inferred from this planet's life characteristics. First, life came about rather shortly after the planet was able to sustain it. So this timing is either very unlikely,
