"Right Brain" people stil believe in the dichotomy of "creative" people and "non-creative" people (they still use the outdate terms "Right Brain" and "Left Brain"), probably because they associate technical work with mental computations and

Why not embrace it? It's not all negative. God knows that, as well as other STEM careers, we need less social stigma.

Everybody should learn to code, in the same way everybody should learn physics. It's basic cultural and scientific knowledge. But that doesn't mean everybody should be a Mechanical Engineer.

It's interesting to see how the word "Design" is getting a more and more specific definition related to people and cognition. As an engineer, I'm starting to be forced to call my designs "engineering designs", because people already associa

I hope only the best frameworks and tools, written by the best programmers, get stadarized, so the application developers can focus on business logic, data science/engineering and interaction design with a robust abstraction below.

Thanks for sharing! Of course this is mainly semantics, but I don't agree with the way the post uses the terms "scientist" and "engineer". In my opinion, the difference between "scientist" and "engineer" lies in the nature of the work they

Abut the programmer/engineer dichotomy: He uses the word "programmer" only for people that write code, and the word "engineer" for people that design technical solutions. Somebody can be both, a "programmer" and an "engineer", but a "progra

The most important point here is the proposition that design should be finished before any coding starts. Thanks to the rise of user experience and interaction design the Waterfall backlash is starting to wear off, and the Agile hype gettin

To be fair, he is clearly talking only in the context of web design and development(engineering). I don't think he is shortsighted per se, only overreaching with his post title.

For quite some time now, the development of software engineering has been making economically viable for some programming tasks to be preformed by Technicians, this is not new. But it is nice to see people starting to accept this. And this

Yes, design (not engineering design but "artsy" design where human perception is a big factor) is fluffy. But that doesn't imply it's bullshit.

You seem to be describing, basically, overengineering applied to visual design. For a developer, an example of equivalent behaviour is being overzealous about a specific programming paradigm. Things that can't be directly quantified in busi

Programming is like Drawing. Drawing the blueprint of an engine is not the same as understanding the fundamentals of physics and engine design. And it's not the same as drawing a portrait, a building or a landscape.

But Chile was not a communist country. The dream of a "mechanical centralized control" was shared by a lot of people in the XX century. It's strongly featured in positivistic SciFi literature of the time, for example I, Robot from Asimov.

What they "said" they were was not what they became (by current definitions). There are a lot of European countries ruled by socialist parties, and they are not communist by any stretch of the imagination.

Probably nothing. But companies that either choose or are "forced" into this will probably start to differentiate "software engineers" from "programmers" (treating the latters as just a "technical labour").

But "activities" are not "phases". You are always trying to get the requirements right, the difference is that some people get them while coding, and others before even start designing.
