Yeah slowness is definitely ":("-worthy, but in my experience Confluence performs pretty well. It really depends how it's installed and how the database is setup also. And the search is weak, I agree, but I haven't experienced any significa

So, here’s the question: why has Firefox been able to do so well in the browser market against the dominant player, while a new and exciting player has yet to emerge in the search engine market to take on Google? Firefox is a shippable pr

Why the frown? I've had success with Confluence at 4 or 5 companies. My biggest complaint is the handling of major revisions to a hierarchy of documents but that's something that's probably specific to me. Confluence is a great fit for busi

I write on anything. I have a deal with myself that whatever I'm noting doesn't have to be correct or even interesting. Just the act of writing it down is enough.

Great use of italics! Anyway, the reward of getting from karma 1 to karma R is greater than from R to R + hogging. If a user is past R karma and then decides to hog, then they're a moron and we should do something about that too. Any ideas?

Option 1: Submissions by users created less than Q days ago or with less than R karma receive some fraction S of karma for each upvote. (Q = R = 30, S = 0.1)

Option 2: Karma throttling. This could also include a karma bank so that once it's determined you're not a bot or a moron, you'd get the karma you deserve.

Okay, so this post may annoy some HN loyalists but it's also a reality that all communities need to deal with eventually. Keep in mind there is a high-probability that someone has already implemented this IKP. Let's turn this lemon into a s

It's a print page for an entire, small-sized website or possibly a summary page for a medium-sized website. It's not a new concept but I would like to see it applied more often. Anything worth doing is worth summarizing.

I currently solve the problem with fast-user switching, but it's annoying (sometimes it's slow, it logs out iChat, and stops iTunes playback). I'd prefer user-switching to be a browser feature and I patiently await the day.

EC2 is like co-location in a cloud, so you will need to handle all sysadmin tasks yourself (however, you can select an image that already has LAMP installed). A single small EC2 instance is around $75 per month + bandwidth. You can also go

EC2 charges only for the time you use, rounded to the next hour. A small instance running for 6.1 hours costs $0.70 + bandwidth. http://www.amazon.com/FAQ-EC2-AWS/b?ie=UTF8&node=2015910...
