That's a very candid interview Owen, thanks (I'm assuming you'll be reading the comments!).

something needs to be done about GPL parasites hiding "in the cloud". Companies and individuals that disregard the specifics of the licenses they are bound by are demonstrating a general lack of care and attention. We already have a solut

There's a great picture of him from around the time of the first production run holding his guitar with two broken arms. I spent a few minutes looking for it but I couldn't find it.

I noticed your post yesterday in the thread about company names and I tried out a few conversations with Tjetter. I saved a couple of the URIs: http://tjetter.com/#3JcS http://tjetter.com/#3Jdz It's an interesting concept but I wasn't s

I ran a few preliminary EC2 disk benchmarks in September: http://solutious.com/blog/2008/09/23/ec2-disk-performance-li... The Solaris performance was really poor compared to Linux. I emailed Sun and initially they were really receptive bu

Some of the symbolism is a bit extreme but overall it's a pretty good overview of life in the Netherlands. There is a level of comfort here that I haven't experienced anywhere else however that comfort has both positive and negative consequ

Staging is one aspect of hosting. I will go even further and say that because a staging environment needs to mimic the production environment as close as possible it should be hosted by the same vendor too. You're right that if you compare

There's still some crucial information missing from this press release (prices and API) but from the information that is there CloudLayer looks like more of competitor to Slicehost and GoGrid than EC2. There's a big difference between launc

You can do things with EC2 you can't do anywhere else. I've helped companies build deployment processes with EC2 that allows them to launch a staging environment with a single command that includes a complete copy of production data. They r

Ya, getting burned by EC2 is a rite of passage. I learned my lesson with Amazon's API tools. Dealing with IDs is cumbersome and dangerous when it comes to production instances. Automation is a necessity. How are you running your automated b

Every EC2 instance has about 150GB of transient disk space. It works like a regular disk but once you shutdown the instance (or in the rare event the instance fails) the disk is gone forever. To solve this problem, Amazon provides EBS volum
