I don't think this only applies to Startups, but in most jobs. There will always be niche groups and little clicks and you may not fall into them, or you might. Just with a larger company there is a larger pool of potential work-buddies.

It might not say it is encrypted, but I doubt the publishers/who ever they have deals with to stay legal would allow them to transfer copyrighted materials in the clear.

It's a tough question to be brutally honest. I agree there should be harsh penalties for false police reports especially in cases such as this. It shouldn't be an almost walk away, try again experience.
