I dunno about a better standard library but I do think Ruby has nicer syntax. You can use back-ticks to run system commands, like: listing = `ls -oh` puts listing puts $?.to_i # Prints status of last system command.

He mentions this in the original article: scripts can be functional documentation. They are an easy way to learn the common commands in a project, can call out the expected workflow, and document all the commands to accomplish it.

When banning spammer accounts, do you think it's better to return an error (i.e. 404) or shadow ban them so it looks like the call succeeded?

I have my own hobby side-project that allows user-generated content. Do you have some tips for minimizing the ways it could be used by spammers/porn? For example, my project is a PWA which (I assume) makes it harder for spammers to us

Help fight my ignorance: what makes 16:10 so much better? If you sat me down in front of two different monitors I doubt I could tell the difference.

It brings up an interesting HN moderation problem: can someone bash a post/article by implying that it was written by GPT-3? The community then has to determine if the comment is snark or a reasonable conclusion.

Maybe we should go back and up-vote the poster who recognized GPT-3. Seems a little unfair now that we know they were right!

I'm not sure people understand the scale that vaccines work at. Right now--because we are close to wiping out polio--more people die every year from the polio vaccine than the actual disease. When you give billions of people a vaccin

I don't think that's necessarily a knock against cancer treatments. In the end we all have to die of something and late-life cancer is probably always going to be a leader. I think a better stat would be the average age of those

I can't downvote (yet!) but if I could it would be rare and would be for one of these two reasons: 1) Extremely rude, disrespectful, or hateful. 2) Pushes conspiracy theories as truthful. Like anti-vaxxers. One of the reasons I value

I'm largely with you. I'm a bit annoyed with the BBC on this article. It seems like just last week overpopulation was a big problem. Now we are "ill-prepared for the global crash" and there will be a "jaw-droppin

When I teach coding I tell the students to document their code well but don't document what the code is doing it. That should be evident from the code itself (if it's not, then consider a refactor). Rather, explain why the co

If you're limiting this to just the U.S., maybe, but I'd say the Soviet invasion of Afghanistan was a bigger blunder.

If the job market (and economy) was zero-sum then why is population growth generally considered good for the economy? Wouldn't young people, as they age into the job market, push out all older workers? This happens in anecdotal cases

Cabot Clothbound Cheddar is a pretty good compromise. It's close to English-style Cheddars and not quite as expensive as other artisanal US Cheddars. A great snacking cheese!
