The whole guilt-trip angle Oatmeal took on this one is really unfortunate; that's a very undiplomatic way to extract money from someone.

While I agree, we can measure human-like intelligence in mammals such as dolphins and whales. So we look for the same attributes in other living creatures.

Yeah but the Earth will be unable to sustain itself during the end of the Sun's life. Maybe I should say the Earth has 2.4 billion years left, not the Sun.

I second the above. Also, walk up 24th street to Potrero then on over to the top of Bernal Hill. If you have time you should definitely check out the views from Twin Peaks. Or all the different 100 or so of species(including Redwoods) of tr

Well, this is the problem with our society as a whole. In particular, and most importantly, the problem with intellectuals. They tend to gloss over the inexplicable things like consciousness and the mind. It's just too hairy and scary

I'm not saying anyone is dumb; I'm saying we as a society haven't made understanding the mind a priority . Also, I did read it. That "workable" definition is so presumptuous about the nature of consciousness. What

I like the intention but obviously it's impossible to compute consciousness because "computing consciousness" doesn't mean anything. We don't know what consciousness is. I don't think many intelligent people re

That seems to be largest complaint I hear from tourists. SF takes care of their homeless. Matter of fact, SF programs are so good we have a problem with other states sending their homeless specifically to SF[1]. I'm from Chicago where

I wonder if ads are reaching saturation, now the next major online money-making shift will be geared towards the healthcare sector. The healthcare sector seems largely unexplored in most app ecosystems.

I think this highlights something I've thought about recently. I've realized reading the "news" is a skill. Particularly, HN. As a reader, you need to be able to quickly differentiate what matters and what doesn't;
