I think the enthusiasm for Arduino (and previously the Basic Stamp) is the excitement that newbies have when they can get something happening on a small embedded system via a simple, spoon fed development environment. I personally have neve

This has been around for a while. Adam Dunkels used it for a C64 based web server. The other day I was looking at the Ettus hardware that is used with GNU radio. That has an FPGA that implements a microblaze soft-CPU and that runs this stac

I looked at the Norvig lis.py code and took the time to understand every line. It's a clever program and taught me a few new Python tricks. The main reason he can get it down to so few lines of code is that he leans back on the capabilities

The village smithy is dead. He's been killed by mass production and the throw-away society. But black smithing is still alive. When you've got the money and the appetite for something unique you can always order a bespoke wrought iron gate

Right - In India and in many parts of Asia the symbol is considered as a positive, being used for religious adornment, political parties and product advertising. It's a great piece of graphic art and it's a real pity the Nazis screwed it up

It's true that we each find ourselves in a context of public and private institutions and that (in addition to our own efforts) we owe our wealth to the existence of those institutions. It does not logically follow that our obligation to su

I'm not sure this patent is very strong. Anybody who did motion estimation on video frames prior to the 2004 filing and did it with a co-processor could probably claim to be prior art on the idea of GPU accelerated motion estimation. The in

I had similar feelings of lust. A couple of years ago I satisfied them by pulling the rom binaries off the web and writing a z80 emulator (in python) that could run them. Conclusion: a) don't expect to write fast cpu emulators in python. b)

I wanted to program computers before I had access to one. I would take books out of the library and write programs in the pseudo language they presented. In 1982 my Dad brought home a Sirius microcomputer for his work. That had BASIC, so I

This won't work. f gives 1 to 5. 7 * f gives 7 to 35. But 7 to 35 will not be evenly generated. Think about it: There are more ways to get a 20 than there are to get a 7 or a 35. Same thing with rolling 2 die.

Don't feel too bad. Zilog still makes and sells them 33 years on. I should be so lucky if anything I do lasts so long.
