At my last job I biked through North Philly everyday. There are some ok neighborhoods, but there are plenty of abandoned strips that look like they were bombed in WWII. It's so sad because you can look at them and say "that used to be a de

Could an anonymizer such as Tor help get around this?

What's interesting to me about stories like this is that with content creators can deliver their art/entertainment without the middlemen and actually make good money doing it to the point that they don't need traditional broadcast formats.

I honestly can't think of any positives that come with being a truck driver. You aren't even "traveling" in the sense that you get to see different places. You're just burning away life with no time to do anything besides listen to radio

> True, but there are real families that incease their income by robbing better off families If you consider taxation theft, then yes.

It's oversimplification. Getting in and out of a war isn't as easy as stopping pizza night on Fridays. And the mechanism of raising tax rates isn't similar to asking for and getting a raise from Father's boss.

Please, no more family analogies. This metaphorical family can't increase their income by taxing better off families and most families don't have such a debilitating, unnecessary monthly payment like numerous wars to pay off.

Code for America is a good project. I know that here in Philadelphia they are trying to make the city government more efficient/productive for citizens.

Thank you for writing this. I think the Airbnb story itself is getting kind of stale, but it's continuing to garner discussion on this site and elsewhere because of the underlining issue, namely that valuations and revenues shouldn't over c

No matter how true it may be, it's depressing that "vote with their wallets" has replaced just being decent and inclusive to other human beings. That feature decisions should be only a monetary calculation and nothing else. Maybe I'm just

Thanks for clarifying, I should look into it more but it's sometimes difficult to follow these legal things. I know it's not unusual, that's my basic question. I can't imagine anyone reading the patent excerpt in that article and going "oh

This is ridiculous. How were they even approved a patent for something so broad and general? Is it a matter of the judges not understanding the technology? There are a lot of recent law school grads out there that are having a hard time f

This article actually looks a little too optimistic to me. I see a lot of chaos with millions of desperate people robbing and hurting anyone that has any food or money, especially in inner cities. "So what good will come of this?" is a lit

That's what I'm wondering, but they are still heavily promoting cell phones like the recent HTC Evo for Evo 3D trade-in. I don't think they can be a relevant DIY shop and standard electronic store at the same time. All of the stores I've

Interesting. I imagine it wouldn't have been too hard for the creators of this graphic to include that, but for some reason they left it out (hmm!). Good example of how data visualization can be misleading.

Unless someone lives in the woods and is off the grid, they benefit from taxation in some fashion. Perhaps not as much if you don't have government contracts, but still indirectly.

Sorry, the "they" was too vague, I meant politicians. There are many in Congress that don't believe that climate change even exists. It seems that most scientists believe that it is the case though.

An uninformed electorate isn't helping, but I don't see how voting is going to fix this. I'm starting to believe that the smart people just don't want to be politicians. It's a good way to become rich and famous, though.
