The most dangerous way to lose time is not to spend it having fun, but to spend it doing fake work. His focus is not criticizing having fun, but wasting time without realizing it.

For Java, running jstack a few times can be much faster and easier than tying up to a profiler and often will show your bottleneck or problem right away.

What benefits does an empty try block give you? You can always use braces to separate a block without try at all.

While it's true there's likely an immigrant in the bunch, it's also very unlikely that all 4096 or 1048576 ancestors are distinct. The tree is bound to overlap.

If all the dollars spent on these sorts of advertisements end up causing me to spend more dollars on those brands and products, is that a net gain or loss for me? What about for society as a whole? If it's a loss for me, what can I do to d

I've had the opposite experience, where I'm more likely to mistype passwords with mixed case letters and symbols holding the shift key down too long. With mobile devices, it gets worse, as common words are easy to type, but symbols and mix

I'll grant you that it's more important to have a password be difficult to guess, but that doesn't obviate the importance of it also being easy to remember. Even better, let's look for password schemes that are harder to guess and easier t

First, that's still beside the point. You shouldn't evaluate a password scheme solely by entropy if it is a password you intend to memorize. XKCD argues that it's easier to remember 4 random words than 8 random characters. Second, your ex

A lot of comments here seem to be missing the point. The main point is to use passwords that give you the most "bang for the buck" in the sense of adding the most bits of entropy for the least difficulty of remembering. Adding an extra num

That's not true. Some people say "We keep your password encrypted" instead of in plaintext, and make the dubious claim that they are then safe. It's good to help them understand the distinction that even if the passwords are encrypted, it

They are not necessarily storing the password in plaintext. However, they are: 1. Storing it in a recoverable format, instead of a format that only allows verification. 2. Emailing them in plain text. Both of which are bad.
