I got a degree in applied mathematics. Some of my favorite courses were in pure math. I think I came away with my degree better for having taken the detour. My only regret at graduation was that I hadn't taken more.

I actually don't like how forums deal with threaded conversations (at least in the forums I still use). I do like being able to quote and multi-quote, but I also like being able to collapse comment trees and only read top-level comme

I've been thinking about "ephemeral Slack" the last few weeks after a flurry of posts about Slack and workplace communication. I love the idea. I use Slack a lot for technical discussions with my peers. I've noticed th

Today I learned that there's a name for the kind of development I do naturally. Modeling my input and output types first is so much more effective at helping me to develop my mental model of the program. I often catch "bugs"

I took a course called Principles of Programming Languages. Covered grammars, regular languages, state machines, and then had practical assignments in Haskell and Prolog. I had the exact same experience with Prolog. I loved it, but I haven&

My rule has always been that if it doesn't fit on one line it gets re-written, or if practical, I will factor out what I can into helpers. As soon as a comprehension spills over into a new line, the readability tanks for me.
