The development was heavily influenced by what particle physics experiments required (developed at CERN and Fermilab so that makes sense), so the field naturally uses it essentially exclusively. It makes it easy to store C++ classes on disk

I've used Arch Linux (with Gnome 3, i3, dwm, Xfce, Cinnamon, Mate) for 6 years now and it has (or any of the DE's/WM's have) _never_ bugged out on me (many different laptops and desktops as well). I've only once had

Very cool! LHCb continues to put out some really awesome results. Here's to hoping for some more exciting results from the rest of the LHC programme in 2017 and 2018.

I found myself becoming disinterested while watching the keynotes over the past couple of years. They present _so many_ things now. I disagree with author's opinion about the people on stage being on commission. I don't feel a sal

I started with Emacs. Every time I've tried to use an IDE I go right back to my first partner that never lets me down.

I agree it's made C++ a bit verbose, though something like the using keyword helps (which is 30 spots below typedef!)

The slow adoption of modern C++ is very apparent. Some things not event listed: forward, unique_ptr, shared_ptr, tuple, constexptr. nullptr is much lower than NULL and move is quite low. These features are now 6+ years old! ;)

Also a physics PhD student. I never touched CS as un undergrad, but I got very interested in writing software as an undergrad when I started in an experimental HEP group (I've never taken any formal programming courses). I don't c

An HN post on software I actually use ;) Those of us in the particle physics world use ROOT quite often. ROOT is pretty old (for me at least, started in the mid 90's) The most recent version (ROOT 6) is a great step forward for modern
