I was in the same position. And eventually, partially because of the mirror-every-morning trick he talked about, I did quit.

Three. The first is from a YC founder. I don't remember who, but he said "Always say yes." I tried that out for a while, and it has worked pretty well. A lot of where I am in my life is because I just said yes when I normally would have shr

They have a ton of social networks. Yahoo Answers, Flickr, etc... Or would those be classified as "communities"?

Being the curious type, I don't think I would have let such an interesting switch sit idly by for a year like this guy did. Why didn't he investigate it further after first making the discovery? Such a great story though.

That sounds like a recipe for failure. A new search engine marketed with Apple's style, while building hardware and converting apps to search/ads?

In San Francisco, 1400 dollars will barely get you a studio (in the interesting parts of the city).

There are "smart" content management systems like Movable Type that let you type into a text area using "bold" and "italic" buttons like Word. When you submit, it automatically converts it to HTML. The NYTimes designers, apparently, type ev

Right, there are always exceptions. But you shouldn't give advice based on exceptional cases.

I can see the reason for this. If you hire a terrible employee, it's harder to fire them than it is to cut off an outsourcing agency. Early employees define the culture of the company. On the other hand, you'll never get the quality of work

The problem is, if you have standards this high, you'll never find someone. The good programmers you talk about are extremely rare.

I call myself an interface designer. But I don't consider what I do purely visual at all. I find that it's hard to describe. How do you describe to someone the feeling you get when you put your tongue on a lemon? Or how it feels to click th

You are awesome. Seriously. Users are fucking awesome, but people like you, people who understand users and are completely transparent about their process are even more awesome. Thank you for the inspiration.

rememberthemilk.com kind of goes halfway, with a freemium model. In some ways, that seems more sane to me than DHH's pay-only ideology.

To point out one startup using cool math: Powerset. Google may use cool math, but be careful calling it the "only" at anything. There are tons of companies you probably haven't heard of doing awesome things. Everyone knows about Google, tho

You gave an angel 60% of your company? You don't know if you will be taxed on your 40% contribution, and yet you already went through with the deal? Your advisors are unable to answer your fairly simple questions? Something is wrong here...

You admire Microsoft's ability to "leverage their monopolistic position" through marketing? Isn't that the complete opposite of the very idea of marketing? Most of their marketing is terrible, anyway. Vista did not make me say "Wow."
