Along the lines of adaptive structures that change depending on how they're used, I thought this article about how JavaScript arrays work in V8 was interesting: https://ryanpeden.com/how-do-javascript-arrays-work-under-

The thing is, React works with plain CSS too. I think a lot of newcomers see that JSX looks like React-flavored HTML and naturally assume that React will have its own flavor of CSS, but it doesn’t. There are libraries for CSS-in-JS of cour

Nice job! It looks like a ton of effort. What's the tech stack for something like this? All homegrown? I've wanted to mess around with screencast editing but programmatic video stuff in general seems daunting.

Your point #1 sounds similar to the method outlined in Profit First[0]. Theirs is a bit more complex and has more accounts (Income, Profit, Owner's Pay, Tax, and Operating Expenses), but the theory sounds the same. It's been a big

A few others are CSS Grid Garden [0] and Flexbox Froggy [1], both multi-level games that teach CSS grid and flexbox techniques with one new concept per level. There's also Flexbox Zombies [2] which requires signup but is still fun and

That default service worker setup was frustrating. Even for local development, it would mess things up sometimes. Luckily they turned it off for new Create React App projects a while back - so at least it shouldn't haunt any new apps.

I remember pointers being very hard to grok when I was first learning about them. And then once I was finally starting to understand, I saw a char and my head exploded. It took some time & practice for it to become second nature, but

Pretty much the only time I care about whether an app is “native” or not is when I have to update it. The CapitalOne app is awful about this. Every month or two (which is roughly how often I open the thing), it requires an update. Not a s

Nothing would stop you from doing that (import thing from ‘./downloaded.js’) but it’s Just Not Done That Way and packages aren’t really built with that in mind, so it probably wouldn’t work very well in practice.

If you want a lightweight cache, check out react-query[0]. It's a nice abstraction around fetching data, and it handles caching out of the box, as well as refetching data when the browser regains focus and a lot of other nice things. 0

The implication behind “we don’t use Redux, we use hooks” is that they’re using React’s Context API directly as a “store”. A component at the top level has some state, probably using the useReducer hook, that state is passed down using a Co
