Thanks! And yeah! It sounds super unnatural when even the tiniest pauses are cut out. Obvs I can’t prevent anyone from using it that way, but I set the defaults to leave a good 1/2 second of space on either side of each cut, and to le

Nope, it’s fine, and maybe even faster actually. The slowest part is drawing the waveform and the (potentially thousands of) red silent areas on a <canvas>, and the Tauri app does better than the Swift app did there. The 2D canvas is

Memory usage seems to be lower with Tauri but I don’t have any hard numbers. CPU is better largely because of finding a way to draw video frames that involves less copying. It’s a (frankly, messy) hack that uses a native window/view po

I feel like I saw a similar thing recently, that generated the “missing” video given 2 end points. Might’ve even been still frames? It was impressive. Can’t remember where I saw it now, though.

I’ve been enjoying using Tauri [0] to develop a desktop app for the last few months. As someone who’s been a web dev, and a C++/Qt dev before that, I think it strikes a nice balance. I can use my web skills on the UI, and do the heavy

And on the subject of learning the skill through practice, probably the most effective thing I’ve tried has been “copy work”, something I learned about in an article[0] by Erik Kennedy a few years back. Basically: reproduce existing good de

100%! I had the same fears when I started rewriting a native Mac video editing app in Electron last year, that it would be a big hurdle and that people would hate it. I don’t think that’s actually true anymore outside of our limited tech bu

I had a similar problem with buying an item on Swappa - the very same “seller found a tracking number going to my town” and gave that to PayPal as proof of shipment. It happened oddly fast, and the ship-from location didn’t match the seller

I think with the UI designs being implemented wrong, it could be either one, depending on how the designs are presented. For instance say you add a fancy, colored, layered shadow to a button. If you point out “hey this shadow is 4 layers, 4

The pithy answer is that honestly, the most likely outcome of posting work online is… nothing happens. It’s a lot of sustained effort over time to grow an audience, and the ‘time’ part is usually crucial here. Dropping 50 blog posts or a re

On the object identity issue - I always wished JS had some way of getting at a unique (printable!) identifier for objects. It’s not very often but sometimes it would be so very useful to be able to console.log(obj.underlyingPointer) to see

Yeah, the annoying thing about that button is it defaults to “on”, though. So if you’re, say, opening a video in incognito because you want to watch a single video without that channel being recommended for the next 6 months, that little au

I second this! Even though I didn’t get very far with the book (got distracted, stopped practicing, forgot to go back to it) it definitely helped me get better at perspective and shading.

This is maybe part of it, but having shipped a macOS app that’s stripped of symbols, crashes can still be debugged as long as I’ve got the dSYM file that was made at build time, so I don’t think it’s a super strong argument. Tools like Sent

This has been happening a lot with StackOverflow and GitHub pages lately. A lot of the times, the actual GitHub or SO link won't even be on the first page. I'm surprised they haven't done some kind of manual pruning of junk l

Yeah I looked at Tauri! It's pretty great and I'm excited to see where it goes. I didn't end up going with it because I had a hard time figuring out how to efficiently send data from Rust -> browser without making a copy,

I looked at Flutter briefly. To be honest, I was a little worried about betting on a Google thing, with the ecosystem being comparatively still pretty small, and with Dart. IMO this project is already in debt on innovation tokens[0] given I

The single-level approach is what Recut does too, and it tries to take a guess at a threshold with clustering but it's not always perfect. Maybe a better way to go would be a dynamic noise gate or kalman filtering or something. Vidbase
