This would be one of the reasons why the language needs to be fixed. I don't think there was any doubt in the minds of those who signed what it was asking. And the new language just removes my messy "let's-just-throw-text-in-this-textbox"

It basically says the same thing. Just with out the grammatical mess. Most of the signatures of come from either here or reddit and I've posted the suggested update text in both places to similar reactions.

Yes, this is a dupe from earlier today. I posted the damned thing by accident while learning the system in a half awake stupor. And, because I was in an half awake stupor, decided it was a good idea to share it with the world after accide

I seem to have lost edit ability, so here's revision 3: The US Patent system is badly broken with respect to software patents. Patents are being issued to companies for “inventions” that are, in fact, common knowledge included in any intro

Yeah, I can't log back in right now. It looks like they had a failed update to the system. It might also just be overloaded.

If I had been actually writing with the intention of publishing, it might have looked something more like this. So here's my suggestion for new language, rip it apart! "Direct the US Patent Office to Cease Issuing Software Patents The US P

Please write a proper one and submit it. I'll sign it and delete the links to mine. Mine was never really meant to "the" petition for this. It was me fooling with the system and when I realized I'd clicked one page too far, I ran with it.

Yeah, I'm begging them to take it down at this point. I do think wiki editing with notifications would be one way to do edits of something people signed. But yeah, still not practical. They did have a "review before publish" page that I

Why don't we work together to come up with language for a new one? Then once we've settled on good language someone can enter it into the system and we can all go sign it.

I agree. What was I drunk? If someone can create a petition with coherent grammar, I fully support moving to that one. And I'll send feedback asking them to remove mine. I've already begged them for editing ability, but I doubt we'll see

Yeah, I know, sorry about that. I was really just playing with the system to see it could do in a late at night "trying to fall back to sleep" period. I didn't know at what point I'd lose editing ability, or that I wouldn't be able to del

That discussion of Science Fiction heavily disappointed me because it lacked any mention of some books that are full to overflowing of amazing ideas and insights. And well written to boot. The Uplift Trilogy (the first one) by David Brin

I believe I was using the definition of value gleaned from the post above which pretty strongly linked value with getting paid for your work. Call it what you will, my point is that the economy is focused on producing something that people

We need to leave behind the concept of "value". Value was created by scarcity. But scarcity is decreasing and, in some cases, disappearing entirely. If it costs me nothing to make a copy of something, then I have no incentive at all to pa

This stems at least partly from a culture which disparages knowledge and education. And the people promoting that culture are often the very same people promoting a free market approach to education.

My problem with using Vim, and the source of my hesitation to learn it more, is that I'm a fairly haphazard typist. I type fast, but messily. I've never really been able to clean it up. I'm just naturally a little clumsy. In my IDE, this

The choice isn't there. I have AT&T for a cable connection. My other option is Comcast, which is just as bad. And Comcast only recently moved into the neighborhood. I know many people who's only choice, literally, is AT&T for an

The problem is that usually that same subset of people are just doing it to prove that it can be done and therefor the programs "aren't sustainable". They form a kind of self-fulfilling prophecy.
