More people own Lost Coast, an addon for Half Life 2, than Half Life 2 itself? How did that happen?

In that case, their command is exactly as "error prone" to anyone who did not download the patch to the PWD.

What is up with that patch command? Why not cd /usr/src; patch -p0 </path/008_openssl.patch ?

As I already said, I am not arguing that "random" passwords are better in practice. Also, a password that uses a very large character space does not have to be random at all.

I think you're missing the point. I'm not arguing that passwords like "H$&v46S13^a" are actually better in practice than passwords like "TheCowSaysMoo". I'm providing one specific case where they are

A bit off topic- why is GHC so large? I recently noticed it was over three times the size of gcc (for amd64, in an .xz archive).

If you just want to play around with RPN a bit, I made a simple (regex-based) RPN calculating Perl script a while back: https://github.com/dbb/math-scripts/blob/master/rpn_calc.pl

The xkcd-style passwords may be less vulnerable to a brute-force attack, but they are more vulnerable to a dictionary attack. There are (very) roughly 2^17 words in the dictionary, so if you pick 4 there are 2^68 possibilities, or 2.95e20.

I knew the Latin meaning. I've honestly never seen it used as a direct replacement for "with" in an otherwise all-English phrase though.

I'd recommend perlretut as well: http://perldoc.perl.org/perlretut.html It goes into more detail about some things that were glossed over in the OP, which may be overwhelming for a newbie but necessary for advancing.

Actually, I don't think that's generally true if you're talking about the libs. A cursory glance at the output of `apt-cache rdepends libgnutls26` suggests that wget is the only relatively "popular" package dependin

For being "obscure", htop manages to find its way into a very large proportion of *NIX screenshots on the web. Not to mention vim, rsync, curl, and ack, all of which I (and I had assumed everyone else) use on a regular basis.

It sounds like they might be planning to charge for the software, include (limited?) access to the source with purchase, and put a no-derivative-works-or-redistribution clause in the license. Actual FOSS would be nice, but non-free software
