When you mention QGIS, you should also mention GDAL, JTS, udig, geoserver, open stree maps, open scene graph, FWtools etc. Open source GIS has awesome list of projects and people, QGIS being only one of them. It really fascinates me.

I guess if you use different topics(queues) in Kafka you can do all this by the help of a processor like Storm, Spark etc, routing messages to different topics hence a workflow.

The biggest strength of Kafka in my opinion is consumer groups.I have been using it since 2016 in at least 3 projects and it never failed, not that big workloads though (~100 messages/sec max). However it is a bit difficult to monitor

I think both these tools are more on the easy side of setting up if you follow their guidelines. You can be up and running very quickly. The problems arise when you need some custom logic in processing log files. If you have simple shipping
