I have the first edition and thoroughly recommend it. The rules he sets out seem to adequately account for any architecture. I’m slightly surprised that the second edition covers microservices. Have you read it? Do you know what angle he ta

I’m surprised to see my answer (anxious) so commonly provided by others. Anxiety, it seems, breeds a sense of isolation?

Around ‘94 you could “download” games over satellite (BSkyB) links and play them. They were higher rez than this article has and far more dynamic. I got so good at the darts game. This is a wonderful trip down memory lane <3

poetry is a game changer for sure. I’ve found using conda, in dev, to provide system libraries and poetry (+ a build.py for our C extensions) to be a really comfortable experience. In CI we use cibuildwheel to produce “statically-linked” wh

This sounds like “taint” in the M&A space. I’ve very limited experience of it and would be interested in hearing more from the better informed folks on this topic! My limited experience: my then-employer opted not to acquire a company a

I can confirm this. Context: part of the engineering team that worked on the chat infrastructure around this time period. The history is basically: - v1: IRC API to process scoped servers (Python backend, haxe front end) - kept API as we mi

That’s fair feedback! I found my OP started to meander with my calling out the bits of Austin that aren’t bad; but clearly in culling those my piece made it sound like a terrible-to-cycle-in-city. It’s not… Except in the summer obvi, when a

Anecdotally, as an Austin, TX, resident and cyclist — this city is so far away from adequate cycling infrastructure that it’s inclusion in this piece taints the rest of it for me. Clearly this piece is light on meaningful details. One examp

The way structlog and rich work together makes for a really great and simple development experience; Stack traces are presented in a gorgeous fashion, log.debug lines have lots of great meta data with them. I almost always start new project

GP's comment resounds heavily with me. I took time off to consider who I am, what I want my "legacy" to be (other than bad puns), etc. My answer to your question is: B2C consumer internet -> Cancer research.

I feel it's fair that they're on AWS right now. Generally the arc of MVP->IPO involves using the cloud to find product market fit, and as that fit improves your revenues should also. Moving from the cloud to a colo would then b

I understand your POV on this, I quit social media relatively silently[1]. From my POV, ex-social-media-addict now "clean" for 838 days[2], there is a strong degree of FOMO attached to not being on SM. Here are a few examples of w

The most annoying aspects of this, from a UX POV, are: * no indication on the PR page that actions are down * no way to run the actions once actions comes back My kingdom for a "rerun actions" button...

I was really impressed with mosh when I used it a few years ago. In this case SSH is going 20ft or so over ethernet, so the aspects that mosh pushes hasn't been necessary.

This is exactly how I found myself building a homelab! I first upgraded the SSD in my MBP-2015 and that gave me a bit of relief, but I soon started running into RAM limits and swapping. So I bought a beefier NUC (Ghost Canyon) and run ProxM

I’ve been tackling that recently. In my case my nuc and my “terminal” are connected via 1Gbps Ethernet. Vim in tmux was terrible; line by line scrolling was very jittery. Witching off font ligatures meant the GPU was able to handle renderin

My experience using plaid with Schwab, on which I have MFA, is that you need to add an MFA code to your password when connecting the two. It works for some duration (a few days?) and then loses sync and you have to re-enter the password+MFA
